MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County girls tennis team got just what it needed on Monday in its final tuneup before Wednesday’s Region 1-AAAAA tournament.
And maybe even got a little bonus thrown in.
The Lady Packers defeated visiting Lawton Chiles High from Tallahassee 3-2 at the Jim Buck Goff Recreation Complex, despite playing without No. 1 singles player Lindsay Jacobs.
“It was a competitive match,” said Lady Packers coach Linda Berl. “That’s what we wanted. That’s what we needed today.”
The victory raised the Lady Packers record to 15-3 as they await word on who they will play in the Region 1-AAAAA tournament that will be held on Wednesday at the Abraham Baldwin College courts in Tifton.
Colquitt’s girls are undefeated in region play and will be the No. 1 seed in the tournament.
A win in their first match will guarantee a first-round state tournament match.
The Lady Packers will be chasing their fourth straight region tournament championship.
Colquitt’s boys fell 2-3 to the Timberwolves and will take a 4-14 record into the tournament.
The Packers are winless in the region.
On Monday, the Lady Packers won at No. 2 singles and No. 3 singles, where the Murphy sisters got a pair of wins, and at No. 2 doubles.
Jacobs, who is 16-1 in her senior season, went to courts, but was too ill to play and left before her team won.
Landi Clark moved up from No. 2 to No. 1 and fell to Kristi Kelly 2-6, 1-6.
Monique Murphy moved up from No. 3 to No. 2 singles and defeated Alex Gill 7-5, 6-3.
The victory raised her record to 16-2.
Monique Murphy’s freshman sister Laura played in her older sister’s No. 3 spot and in her first varsity match defeated Anna Printy 6-4, 6-3.
“For a freshman in her first varsity match, I couldn’t be prouder of her,” Berl said. “And that experience will help if we need her at region or state. And it will help next year too.”
At No. 1 singles, Anne Yearta and Gracie Qurnell lost to Beth Kumer and Donna Grant 6-4, 2-6, 4-6. The No. 2 doubles team of Jessica Harvin and Savanna Lamon got the clinching point for the Lady Packers with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Macaela Killing and Annabell Cherry.
In extra matches, Dresden Melton lost a singles match 7-9; Cara McCalley won 8-5; and Laura Murphy and Kayla Kelly won 8-6.
The Packers won at at No. 3 singles and at No. 2 doubles, but could not find another point to knock off the Lawton Chiles boys.
Zach Owen played No. 1 singles and fell to Micah Andrews 2-6, 1-6.
At No. 2 singles, Austin York fell to Jamison Stillwell 5-7, 3-6.
Shaun Soderstrom raised his season record at No. 3 singles to 10-7 with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Nick Griffin.
“I was especially pleased with his effort,” Packers coach Grant Hammack said of Soderstrom. “He is a battler.”
At No. 1 doubles, Chris Harvin and Bradley Michie lost to Josh Levy and Brandon Cummings 2-6, 3-6.
And playing perhaps their best match of the season, Zach Clifton and Barclay Mitchell won over Bryce Crosby and Omid Baniahmed at No. 2 doubles, 6-4, 6-3.
“I think they are getting more comfortable with each other,” Hammack said of his No. 2 doubles team.
Hammack said his team is playing better as it faces the Region 1-AAAAA tournament.
“It’s just those crucial points,” Hammack said. “We just can’t seem to close them out.”
In an extra boys match, Tanner Vereen fell 6-8.
