MOULTRIE — Five Moss Farms divers qualified for the East Championships on Saturday, with Anna Aguero and Ryan Helms taking first-place finishes in regional competition in Connecticut.
Moss Farms had qualifiers in four other events on Friday. The regional competition, which is being held at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn, concludes today with Ann Perry Blank and Jillian Braun taking part in the girls 14-15 1-meter event.
Divers who finish in the top six in each event qualify for the East Championships, which will be held Apri 28-30 at the Blodgett Pool at Harvard University in Boston, Mass.
On Friday, Leah Piemonte finished first in the 21-girls 11-and-under 1-meter event, scoring a 176.35.
Aguero and Helms each took second-place finishes.
Aguero was the runner-up in the 16-18 girls 1-meter event, scoring a 326.10.
First place went to Kristen Meier of Viking Diving with a 330.35.
Helms won his silver medal on Friday in the 16-18 boys 3-meter event wit his score of 445.15.
Daniel Mezzaferro was first with a 461.15.
Owen Blank of Moss Farms also qualified for the East Championships with his fifth-place finish. He scored a 407.45.
The performance of the Moss Farms team was even more impressive on Saturday, with five of those competing qualifying for the East Championships and the other missing by just two points.
Aguero won the 3-meter event.
“She did a fantastic job,” Moss Farms coach Ron Piemonte said. “She just nailed all her dives.”
Helms also won a gold medal, taking the 1-meter event in the extremely competitive boys 16-18 age group.
“He didn’t miss any dives,” Piemonte said. “And he did a 2 1/2 pike for three nines.”
Owen Blank, who qualified Friday on 3-meter, finished just two points out of sixth place on 1-meter on Saturday.
“It was heart-breaking,” Piemonte said. “He didn’t make any real big mistakes. But that’s how tough the competition was.”
Ann Perry Blank will go to the East Championships on the strength of a second-place finish on the 3-meter board in the girls 14-15 competition.
Jillian Braun qualified for the first time when she finished fifth in the same event.
“Jillian did a fantastic job,” Piemonte said. “She hit every dive in her list.
And Piemonte’s daughter Leah added to her first-place 1-meter finish with a third-place on 3-meter on Saturday.
