MOULTRIE — With the Colquitt County boys soccer team trying to figure a way out of a three-game losing streak, there are other teams the Packers wish they could face tonight rather than Houston County.

Not only is Houston Couny 9-0-1 this season and a perfect 4-0 in Region 1-AAAAA, the Bears also will visit Mack Tharpe Stadium at Tom White Field coming off the only blemish on their record, a 0-0 tie with Warner Robins on Wednesday.

And that tie dropped the Bears out of the No. 10 position in Class AAAAA.

The Bears have been dominant in their first 10 games, outscoring their opponent 26-2.

And in region matches, the Bears have yet to give up a goal, defeating Tift County and Coffee 3-0, Valdosta 2-0 and Lowndes 1-0.

In the tie with Warner Robins, Houston County played 10 minutes overtime, giving the Bears 90 minutes of soccer to rest from before meeting the Packers.

“If we play sound defense, we’ll be all right,” said Packers coach Randall Balch. “If we stay within ourselves and play ball-control soccer, maybe our legs will be a little fresher than theirs.”

The Packers will take a 5-7 record into the match and are 2-3 in Region 1-AAAAA matches.

After defeating Coffee 2-1 on March 10, the Packers have dropped three straight, including successive 2-1 decisions to Tift County and Valdosta and, on Saturday, an 8-1 loss to Thomasville.

Colquitt County’s girls will try to win their third straight after suffering a 6-0 loss to Tift County on March 15.

Since then, the Lady Packers have defeated Valdosta 4-2 and Thomasville 10-2.

The Lady Packers are led offensively by freshman Alba Hernandez, who has scored 21 goals and has at least one in 10 of the team’s 12 matches.

The 10-2 Lady Packers, who are 4-1 in the region, also have receive plenty of offense from senior Sha Wetherington, who has 12 goals despite also being used on occasion on defense.

Junior Kristin Hall and freshman Abbey Taylor each have six goals. Whitney Hood has scored five times.

The Lady Packers are outscoring their opposition 55-19 and except for the six goals put in by Tift County, they have not allowed more than two goals in a match since a season-opening 3-1 loss to Warner Robins.

Houston County’s girls are making a bid for a first-round home playoff match and will bring a 7-2 overall record and a 2-1 mark into the match. The Lady Bears have blanked Coffee 5-0 and Valdosta 2-0, but lost to Tift County 6-1.

Houston’s other loss was by a 1-0 score to Warner Robins on Wednesday. The defeat ended the Lady Bears’ six-match winning streak.

The Lady Bears are outscoring their nine opponents by a combined 36-8.
