MOULTRIE — Former Packer Brian Knighton, now a junior starting running back on the Fort Valley State University football team, was among the students recognized at the school’s recent Honors Convocation.

Students who maintained a cumulative average of not less than a B for 12 or more semester hours were honored. Knighton was among 40 athletes honored.

Of this and that:

• Jake Mobley continues to have a fine season for the Georgia Southwestern baseball team. The senior infielder is hitting .308 and leads the Hurricanes with 18 runs batted in.

Mobley went 5-for-6 earlier against Albany State on Feb. 28 and has two three-hit games, against Reinhardt College on March 7 and against Flagler College on March 10.

On Tuesday, he went 2-for-4 in the 15-11 victory over Albany State.

The Hurricanes are 17-16 overall and 9-9 in the Southern States Athletic Conference. Georgia Southwestern will play at Berry College today.

• The Johnson C. Smith University women’s basketball team finished the 2005-2006 season with a 20-11 record. The Lady Golden Bulls, coached by Colquitt County Sports Hall of Famer Vanessa Taylor, advanced to Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament championship game, where they were defeated by Shaw, 53-50.

Smith lost its first-round South Atlantic Regional game, falling to Clayton State, 76-52.

• Will Southwell went 1-for-1 with and RBI and Aaron Eubanks worked a perfect inning while striking out the side as Georgia Southern defeated Coppin State 18-3 on Wednesday in Statesboro.

Southwell is hitting .238 with a double, a pair of home runs and seven RBIs for the Eagles.

Eubanks is 1-2 with a 6.75 ERA. The left-hander has struck out 11 and walked three.

The 11-12 Eagles will play The Citadel at 6 p.m. today, noon Saturday and 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

• For the football fan’s calendar, the Colquitt County High football team will practice three days in shorts, Aug. 2-4, before donning full pads on Aug. 7.

Packers coach Tim Cokely said it is unlikely the team will go to camp this year.

The Packers will play at Cairo in a scrimmage on Thursday, Aug. 24, before opening the 2006 season at Cook on Friday, Sept. 1.

• As expected the Tift County baseball team is having an excellent season. After a 10-8 victory over Perry on Wednesday, the Blue Devils record stood at 12-1.

And in seven home games, the Blue Devils have allowed just one run.

• The Valdosta High football team will open its 2006 season by playing host to Jordan High of Salt Lake City, Utah, on Sept. 1.

The Wildcats will travel to Kingsland to meet Chattahoochee at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 9, in the South Georgia Classic at Camden County High.

Valdosta will play host to Brookwood and Lincoln High of Tallahassee the next two weeks before embarking on its Region 1-AAAAA schedule with a game at Colquitt County on Sept. 29.

• Former Packers assistant coach Tony Kirkland, now the head coach at South Effingham, has his Mustangs off to an 8-1 start.
