MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County girls tennis team secured the top seed in the Region 1-AAAAA tournament by taking a 4-1 victory over Lowndes on Tuesday at the Jim Buck Goff Recreation Complex courts.

With just a March 28 match against Tift County remaining, the Lady Packers have won all but one region match, a 2-3 loss to Valdosta on March 16.

The victory over the Vikettes also raises the Lady Packers record to 10-3 this season.

Like several other 4-1 victories this season, it was not as one-sided as it may appear.

The Lady Packers won early when Monique Murphy took care of Laura Godwin 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.

But Landi Clark lost at No. 2 singles, 3-6, 0-6 to Taylor Jarvis.

But the two doubles teams came through before the expected victory by Lindsay Jacobs at No. 1 singles.

Colquitt County’s No. 1 doubles team of Gracie Qurnell and Anne Yearta lost the first 2-6 set to Savannah Roberts and Leah Taylor.

But Qurnell and Yearta battled back to take a tough second set 7-6(7-1), then had a battle to win the third set 6-3.

“Lowndes just rolled over us in the first set,” coach Linda Berl said. “We just couldn’t find our game in the first set.”

But the two Colquitt County seniors turned the tables in the final two sets.

“That was Gracie and Anne’s best match of the year,” Berl said. “That might have been the best doubles I’ve seen this year.”

The No. 2 doubles match was almost the exact opposite, with Colquitt County’s Jessica Harvin and Savanna Lamon wining he first set 6-0, but losing the second 1-6.

“We lost it,” Berl said. “But we got it back.”

Harvin and Lamon won the final set 6-0.

“We came through and played our best tennis of the season,” Berl said.

Berl noted that although the team has the No. 1 seed in the region tournament, it still must place in the top four to advance to the state tournament.

The top two teams from the region tournament will play first-round state tournament matches at home.

In extra matches, Katy Weilbrenner defeated Stephanie Green 8-4; Laura Murphy won a singles match 8-4; Carli Hester won; and Dresden Melton and Meghan Traylor battled to a 5-5 doubles match tie.

The Colquitt County boys fell 5-0 to Lowndes, but coach Grant Hammack said he felt better about the way his team played against the Vikings than it did against Valdosta or Coffee.

“Lowndes is a legitimate Final Four team,” Hammack said. “I wouldn’t be surprised to see them get there.”

And while the loss dropped the Packers to 2-11, “the kids are keeping a good attitude,” Hammack said. “I think all this is serving a purpose. We just have to suck it up and work our way through it.”

Hammack also said that he believes the region is as tough as he can remember it.

“This is as deep as the region has ever been,” he said. “There are good players all over.”

The Packers lost at No. 1 where Austin York fell to Mikey Millner 0-6, 0-6.

At No. 2 singles, Zach Owen lost to Clayton Griffin 2-6, 3-6. At No. 3, Shaun Soderstrom fell to Thomas Bathrus 2-6, 3-6.

Colquitt County’s No. 1 doubles team of Bradley Michie and Chris Harvin lost its first set 3-6, then came back to win 6-1.

But up 4-3 in the third set, the Colquitt County pair could not close the deal and fell 4-6 to Dane Borff and Eli Roundtree.

At No. 2 doubles, Zach Clifton and Tanner Vereen fell to Perry Pulido and Andrew Smith 3-6, 1-6.

In an extra singles match, Barclay Mitchell fell 0-6, 1-6.

Colquitt County will play Friday and Saturday in the Bainbridge Rotary Tennis Tournament.

Colquitt County will be in one bracket with Thomasville and Thomas County Central. Bainbridge, Tift County and Lee County will be in the other bracket.

The Colquitt County boys team will meet Thomasville and Thomas County Central on Friday.

“If we play well, we could do all right in that tournament,” Hammack said.
