MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County girls tennis team has defeated Coffee twice this season by identical scores.
And coach Linda Berl’s assessments of both victories were identical as well.
“That was a tough 4-1,” Berl said after the Lady Packers raised their record 9-3 with the victory over the Lady Trojans on Monday at the Jim Buck Goff Recreation Complex.
The Lady Packers got their accustomed victory at No. 1 singles when Lindsay Jacobs put away Jenny Tippin 6-0, 6-3.
Monique Murphy had another of her marathon matches and again came out on top in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(7-5), over Maggie Thomas.
Both doubles teams played well, with the No. 1 pairing of Gracie Qurnell and Anne Yearta winning over Dominiqua Lim and Adrienne Moore, 6-1, 6-1.
And at No. 2 doubles, Jessica Harvin and Savanna Lamon won over Kala Stormant and Jessica Buckhalter 6-0, 6-3.
“I was really pleased with how are doubles played,” Berl said. “Gracie and Anne really played well.
“And Jessica and Savanna played as well have and then the other team caught fire.”
The second set at No. 2 doubles was tied 3-3 when Landi Clark had lost at No. 2 singles to Rae Cater 4-6, 0-6, and Murphy was down in her second set after losing the first.
“We didn’t want to go to a third set and we didn’t,” Berl said.
Harvin and Lamon won the last three games to get a crucial point and Murphy and Jacobs finished up the victory.
Today’s matchup at the Jim Buck Goff Recreation Complex will pit the Region 1-AAAAA’s No. 1 Lady Packers against No. 2 Lowndes.
The Vikettes are 8-4 overall and are 3-2 in region matches. In their last two matches, the Lowndes girls have defeated Valdosa and Coffee by 4-1 scores.
In extra matches on Monday, Laura Murphy won 8-0; Carli Hester won 8-3; Kayla Kelly won 8-3; Cara McCalley won 9-7; and Dresden Melton and Meghan Traylor won 8-3.
Colquitt’s boys fell 1-4.
Auston York fell at No. 1 singles to Jerry Oliver 6-7(5-7), 1-6. Zach Owen lost at No. 2 singles to Rashard Carson 1-6, 1-6. Shaun Soderstrom lost at No. 3 singles to Pete Powe 1-6, 1-6.
Senior Bradley Michie and freshman Chris Harvin combined forces at No. 1 doubles to give Colquitt County its only point with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Vijesh Patel and Chris Goodwin.
“That was probably the best they have played since they started playing together,” Packers coach Grant Hammack said of Michie and Harvin.
At No. 2 doubles, Zach Clifton and Barclay Mitchell fell to Paul Pow and Reese Grantham 4-6, 3-6.
“We just need to be more consistent,” Hammack said.
