MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County girls tennis team rebounded nicely from Thursday’s disappointing loss to Valdosta to defeat Houston County 4-1 in on Friday in Warner Robins.

Colquitt County boys fell 1-4 to the Bears.

The three-time defending Region 1-AAAAA champions had their chance for an undefeated region season dashed by the Lady Wildcats the day before, but Colquitt breezed through the singles matches on Friday to defeat Houston County for the second time this season.

At No. 1 singles, Lindsay Jacobs defeated Sarah Dunn 6-1, 6-1.

At No. 2, Landi Clark had little trouble with Heather Gladney, winning 6-1, 6-2.

And Monique Murphy took care of business against Kayla Donaldson, winning 6-1, 6-0.

Colquitt’s No. 1 doubles team of Gracie Qurnell and Anne Yearta lost its first set against Sara Anzjohn and Candace Hall, but rallied to win the next two 6-2, 6-3.

“Gracie and Anne got their game back,” Lady Packers coach Linda Berl said. “They played well in the second and third sets.”

The Lady Packers only loss came at No. 2 doubles, where Dresden Melton and Meghan Traylor played together for the first time and fell to Elizabeth Brighton and Lindsay Wynn 6-2, 4-6, 6-7(5-7).

“They got to play three sets and experience a tie-break,” Berl said. “They next time they play, they’ll have that experience.”

Colquitt’s girls are now 7-3.

Colquitt’s boys won only at No. 3 singles, where Shaun Soderstrom defeated Will Spence 6-0, 6-0.

“He’s really been a bright spot for us,” Packers coach Grant Hammack said. “He just continues to improve.”

At No. 1, Zach Owen lost to 0-6, 0-6 to Cory Seay and att No. 2, Austin York fell to Ryan Bartz 2-6, 0-6.

At No. 1 doubles, Bradley Michie and Chris Harvin fell 4-6, 2-6.

At No. 2 doubles, Barclay Mitchell and Zach Clifton lost 2-6, 3-6.

“We’re still young and inexperienced,” Hammack said of his team, now 2-9. “We’re getting better, little by little.”

Colquitt County will meet Region 1-AAAAA rival Coffee at home on Monday and will play host to Lowndes on Tuesday.
