MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County junior varsity girls soccer team rebounded from a pair of 1-0 defeats to get a 1-0 victory of its on Saturday, knocking of Coffee High in Douglas.

The junior varsity boys completed the sweep with a 5-1 victory.

The girls team went to Douglas with just 11 players and one went down with an injury during the match.

But eighth-grader Suzi Hernandez, who played just seven minutes in the middle school girls 3-0 victory earlier in the day against Coffee Middle School, filled in and scored the match’s only goal.

“The girls played outstanding,” coach Andy Chapura said. “It was so hot over there.”

The junior varsity girls are still getting used to a new defense after sweeper Tiffany King was lost for the season with a knee injury last week.

But the flat-back four worked to perfection against the Lady Trojans on Saturday.

Chapura said his team played well in the 1-0 losses to Tift County and Houston County in the two most recent matches.

“We had shots,” he said. “We just haven’t been able to bury them in the back of the net.”

The Colquitt County boys got two goals each from Nathan Fowler and Jose Carranza and one from Beau Holden to keep their record unblemished at 6-0-1.

The goal was the first of the season for Holden, who later in the match broke his arm.

Carranza’s goals were his first of the season. Fowler now has four goal.

“We got to play the young guys a bunch,” said JV soccer coach Mell Wier.

“We kept our main starters out a good bit.”

The junior varsity teams will travel to play Valdosta on Thursday.

The girls will start 5 p.m. The boys will start at 7 p.m.
