MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County girls tennis team continues to defeat Region 1-AAAAA opponents, knocking off Tift County 4-1 on Thursday at the Jim Buck Goff Recreation Complex.

The Lady Packers are now 6-2 overall, but have defeated all five of their region opponents.

Colquitt County’s boys won at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, but came up short against the Blue Devils, losing 2-3.

The Lady Packers won both doubles matches with the senior partnership of Gracie Qurnell and Anne Yearta taking care of Rachel Samples and Kristy Truman 7-6(7-1), 6-2 at No. 1.

What now appears to be the solid No. 2 doubles team of Jessica Harvin and Savanna Lamon downed Lauren Lindsay and Lindsay Ellis, 6-1, 6-3.

Colquitt won at No. 1 singles where Lindsay Jacobs took care of Stacy Perlis 6-1, 6-1.

Monique Murphy, at No. 3, won over Leah Lamb 6-3, 6-2.

The Lady Packers lost only at No. 2 singles, where Landi Clark fell to Rachel Cohen, 2-, 2-6.

But Clark was ill throughout the match.

“We didn’t know it, but she was playing sick,” Lady Packers coach Linda Berl said. “But she was playing well.

“Tuesday (against Lowndes) and today, she has played two very good No. 2 players.”

Berl said she was pleased that Qurnell and Yearta were able to win their first-set tie-breaker.

“That was senior experience coming through,” Berl said.

Harvin and Lamon appear to have the No. 2 doubles position nailed down.

Harvin had one slot, but Berl had not decided on her partner until recently.

“We’ve settled on Savanna,” Berl said. “The other girls are playing well and will get other opportunities. But No. 2 played the best they have all year.”

In extra matches on Thursday, Carli Hester won a singles match and the teams of Dresden Melton and Megan Traylor and Cara McCalley and Kayla Kelly won doubles matches.

The tennis Packers fell to 1-7, but coach Grant Hammack said he was encouraged.

“We’re getting better,” he said. “Two of the last three have been pretty close. We’re playing better as a team. It’s just a matter of time before we turn the corner.”

The Packers had a chance against the Blue Devils on Thursday, but lack of experience may have hurt them.

The No. 1 doubles team lost first, but Colquitt’s No. 2 and No. 3 singles players won to put the Packers up 2-1.

But the Packers lost at No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles to come up short.

“We had our opportunities,” Hammack said. “We’ve just got to learn to close people out. We’re letting people off the hook.”

At No. 1 singles, Zach Owen lost the first set to Billy Griffin 3-6, but came back to take the second 6-3. But Griffin got the final set, 6-0.

At No. 2 singles, Austin York came through with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Matt Hughes.

“Austin played extremely well today,” Hammack said.

At No. 3 singles, Shaun Soderstrom won over Sam Drew in three sets. Soderstrom dropped the first 2-6, but then rallied to win 6-1, 6-0.

“He has been a pleasant surprise for us,” Hammack said of Soderstrom, a sophomore.

The No. 1 doubles team of Chris Harvin and Bradley Michie fell to Charles Brown and Paton Willis, 2-6, 4-6.

“They were playing what is probably the best No. 1 doubles team in the region,” Hammack said of Harvin and Michie.

At No. 2 doubles, Barclay Mitchell and Zach Clifton lost to David Metzger and Caleb Tillam 2-6, 0-6.

In an extra match, Tanner Vereen lost at singles, 5-8.

Both of the Colquitt County tennis teams will be out for revenge when they play host to Bainbridge at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Jim Buck Goff Recreation Complex.

Bainbridge swept the Packers and Lady Packers in the Tifton Rotary Tournament last Saturday. Both of the Colquitt County teams fell 2-3.

The Packers and Lady Packers will continue Region 1-AAAAA play on Thursday, March 16, when they travel to Valdosta.

The will go on the road again the next to play Houston County.
