MOULTRIE — Colquitt County’s Monique Murphy found herself down 0-5 in the first set of her match with Lowndes High’s Lauren Godwin on Tuesday in Valdosta, but that was not the worst of it.

“We were down in the match at the time and she knew it,” Lady Packers coach Linda Berl said.

All Murphy did in response was rally to win the the first set 7-5, then take the second 6-4 as the Colquitt County girls rebounded from two straight losses in last weekend’s Tifton Rotary Tournament to get a key 3-2 Region 1-AAAAA victory over Lowndes.

Colquitt County’s boys fell to the Vikings 1-4.

All three of the Colquitt County’s girls points were hard-earned.

At No. 1 singles, Lindsay Jacobs lost her first set 6-7 (3-7), but came back to win the next two 6-3, 6-1 over Laci Hansen.

And the No. 1 doubles team of Gracie Qurnell and Anne Yearta won in straight sets over Leah Taylor and Savannah Roberts, but after winning the first 6-1, had to go to a tie-breaker to win the second 7-6(7-4).

The Lady Packers lost at No. 2 singles, where Landi Clark fell to Taylor Jarvis 2-6, -2, and at No. 2 doubles, where Jessica Harvin and Savanna Lamon suffered their first defeat, losing to Lynde Taylor and Allison Keener 6-7(4-7), 5-7.

Murphy’s victory at No. 3 singles was the key, Berl said.

“I was so proud of Monique,” she said. “There was so much pressure. This was a region match.

“Being down 5-0, a lot of players would have given in, at least the first set. But she didn’t. It was incredible.”

The victory snapped a two-match losing streak and raises the Lady Packers record to 5-2.

The Colquitt County boys won only at No. 3 singles where sophomore Shaun Soderstrom, who did not play tennis last year, defeated Matt Odom 7-6(7-4), 2-6, 6-3.

At No. 1 singles, Zach Owen fell to Mikey Millner, perhaps the best singles player in the region, 0-6, 0-6.

At No. 2, Austin York fell to Clayton Griffin 2-6, 0-6.

At No. 1 doubles, Bradley Michie and Chris Harvin lost to Dave Boraff and Andrew Smith 0-6, 4-6.

Tanner Vereen and Zach Clifton lost at No. 2 doubles, 1-6, 0-6.

The Packers are now 1-6 on the season.

Colquitt County will return to the Jim Buck Goff Recrea-tion Complex courts at 4 p.m. Thursday to meet Tift County.
