MOULTRIE — Meghan Marshall and Devin Corgan continued to dominate top competition in their best events at the Gasparilla Classic in Clearwater, Fla., recently as the Moultrie YMCA optional gymnastics teams had a final tuneup for the USAG State Meet.

Corgan used a 9.10 to win the vault gold medal and finished second in the all-around (35.00) in what is billed as the “World’s Largest Gymnastics Meet.”

Corgan added fourth-place finishes on bars (8.625) and beam (8.375).

Marshall is healthy again and showed it on her top event by finishing first on floor with a very strong 9.425.

She added a second on vault (8.90) and scored an 8.25 on beam and a 7.975 on bars for 34.55 and third in the all around.

“Meghan literally jumped off the bars when they made a loud noise shortly after her mount,” coach Bob Swadel said. “A loose anchor chain flipped over and made a sharp clanging sound. I was standing right there and heard it myself. I can’t blame her for getting off!

That usually doesn’t happen. The equipment at big meets comes right from the manufacturer. It was counted as a fall and cost her a big .5 deduction. Her bars looked good, so I’m not concerned going into state.”

Swadel said Corgan and Marshall were born two days apart and have competed with each other since level 5. Each has made the other better. They are both YMCA All-Americans and USAG Regional Event Champions from 2005.

“Meg-han added a YMCA National Floor Champion-ship later in the year,” Swadel said. “Devin has won vault in four of five meets this year and finished second in the other. Meghan’s new floor routine has been first in the past two meets.”

Leah May turned in another strong floor routine, finishing second with a 9.075.

“Leah stuck her new vault in a meet for the first time this year, scoring 8.70, but struggled a little on beam. She won beam at Edgewater last week, so I’m confident that she will be ready for the State Meet in Cartersville in two weeks. The extra week will give beam coach, Christina Blanton and Leah time to make some adjustments.” Swadel said.

The Level 8 team was again led by its youngest athlete. Kenyadah Prime, 12, scored a season high 9.20 for fourth on bars and a solid 9.00 and 8.80 on vault en route to a 35.25 sixth place all around.

“Kenyadah has scored above 9.00 on each event this year in big invitational meets,” Swadel said. “If she puts them together at state she can qualify for USAG Regionals in Huntsville, Ala., in April.”

Kambria Blakely placed second on vault (9.05) and sixth on floor (8.95) and all around with a 33.375.

Krista Wood placed seventh on bars (8.525) and floor (8.70) and sixth on vault (8.40), beam (8.025) and all around (33.275).

Heather Scites placed fifth on bars (8.550 and seventh on floor (8.60) and all around (32.95).

Rachel Dampier placed third on vault (8.80) and scored 32.375 all around.

Krysta Michael placed fifth on vault (8.425) and added a 32.50 all around.

Temira Davis placed sixth on beam (8.025) and Kaitlin Tucker contributed an 8.40 on bars and 32.05 all around.

Crystal Blizzard scored on 8.05 on vault before she withdrew from the meet after hurting her knee while warming up for bars.

“The Level 8’s looked tired and a little unfocused at Tropicana Field this week. We have been in big meets all year to help prepare for state and nationals. We just have to work hard and smart at practice for the next two weeks. I expect we’ll see a lot of improvement in Cartersville,” Swadel added.
