MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County girls tennis team survived its first stern test of the season on Thursday, defeating Coffee High in Douglas 4-1.

And while the Colquitt County boys team fell 1-4 for its third straight match to open the season, coach Grant Hammack was pleased with the improvement his team is showing.

Colquitt County girls coach Linda Berl said going into her team’s match that Coffee is one of the coming teams in Region 1-AAAAA and the Lady Trojans proved it.

Colquitt won easily at No. 1 singles, where Lindsay Jacobs dispatched Jenny Tippin 6-1, 6-2, and at No. 1 singles, where Gracie Qurnell and Anne Yearta won over Dominique Lim and Danielle Ricketson, 6-1, 6-3.

But Colquitt lost its first for the first time this season when Landi Clark fell in three sets to Rae Carter, 6-3, 4-6, 2-6.

And Monique Murphy was pushed at No. 3 singles before winning over maggie Thomas 6-3, 7-5.

The No. 2 doubles team of Jessica Harvin and Savanna Lamon also needed three sets to win, taking down Kayla Stormant and Jessica Buckhalter, 1-6, 6-4 and 10-6 in a third set tie-break.

“They are for real,” Berl said of Coffee. “We had some real close matches.”

In extra girls matches, Cara McCalley won 8-1; Dresden Melton and Megan Traylor lost to Pippin and Thomas 4-6; Laura Murphy and Carli Hester won 8-1; and Kayla Kelly and Laura Robinson won 5-2.

Hammack shuffled his lineup and had three new singles players for the match against Coffee.

At No. 1 singles, Zach Owen fell to Jerry Oliver in three sets 1-6, 6-2, 4-6.

“He is starting to get confident,” Hammack said of Owen. “I think he grew up in that second set.”

Austin York moved from doubles to No. 2 singles and fell to Rashad Carson 2-6, 1-6.

Shaun Soderstrom also moved to singles from doubles and lost to Pete Pow 3-6, 2-6. The Packers got their only point at No. 1 doubles, where Chris Harvin, who had been playing No. 1 singles, teamed with Bradley Michie to beat Paul Pow and Vijesh Patel, 6-2, 7-5.

At No. 2 doubles, Tanner Vereen and Barclay Mitchell lost to Reese Grantham and Chris Goodman 5-7, 4-6.
