MOULTRIE — The Moultrie YMCA gymnastics teams competed in the recent Dream Believers Classic held at the Dream It Gymnastics Center in Tifton.
“For all of the gymnasts who competed, dreams do come true,’ said coach Pat Murphy.
“Each gymnast made at least one of their goals. Seven nines were scored in this meet.’
Those were scored by Amber Kling, a 9.4, and Allison Fagan, 9.3, on vault in level 4; Heather Harvell, 9.15, on beam in level 5; Meghan Merritt, 9.05, also on beam; and Brooke Robinson scored three of them on vault 9.0, bars 9.075 and floor 9.15 in level 7.
“I can’t say enough about the level 4 team on vault,” said Coach Patti Merritt. “As a team we improved by 1.35 over the last competition.”
Allison Fagan placed third all around with a 33.5, in the 8- year-old age group.
“Allison had a lot more confidence performing at this meet. She looked really good,” said Merritt.
Fagan placed third on vault with a 9.3 and on bars with an 8.3 and was fourth on beam, with a 7.775 and floor with an 8.15.
Sidney Cokely broke her all around record by scoring a 32.55 to place fifth.
“Sidney had our team’s highest beam score, an 8.2 for seconnd place. She has poise on that event,” Merritt said.
Cokely placed second on bars 8.35 and fifth on vault 8.8, another record for her.
Amber Kling placed first on vault with a 9.4 in the 7-year-old age group and scored her best all around of a 31.95 for sixth place.
She had the team’s most improved all around score from last meet.
“Amber Kling is our team’s power house vaulter,” said Merritt adding that the young gymnast’s “hard work proved to pay off.”
Kylee Sumner of Adel counted for the team’s score on beam and floor.
“Kylee was out sick the week before this meet and still managed to break her records on those events.” said Merritt.
She placed eighth in the 9-year-old age group scoring 31.55.
Clara Gene Vines record goals improved on vault with a 8.95 for fourth and on floor with a 8.075. She placed seventh all around scoring 31.325.
“She missed her dismount on beam and she will fix that mistake for the next meet.” said Merritt.
Murphy said she was pleased with the level 5 gymnasts.
“Wow, what great all around scores,” Murphy said. “They had an increase of a combined total of five points.”
Heather Harvell led the team scoring 33.3 to place fourth all around in the 13-and-older age group.
“Heather’s beam was smooth and flowing,” said Murphy. “She was so surprised to score a 9.15 for first place.”
Harvell placed third on vault 8.45 and fifth on bars 7.9.
“Camille Kirkland made her goal to improve the two events she doesn’t really like,” said Murphy. “Her beam and floor were much better.”
Kirkland was seventh on beam with a 8.25, bars with an 8.425 and all around with a 32.1.
Betsy Booth was the team’s top gymnast in improving her all around.
“Betsy had a really pretty beam routine and when we get rid of the fall she will score high,” said Murphy.
Booth improved on the hard events. She had an 8.2 on bars and a 7.9 on beam. She placed eighth with a 31.85 all around in the 9-year-old age group.
“Susannah Harvell had a consistent meet, scoring three eights,” Murphy said.
Harvell made her goal to break the team record for level 6 on beam by scoring an 8.45 to place first. She placed second on vault 8.1, bars 6.5, floor 8.05 and all around 31.1.
Kristin Whitman was sick with the flu so the team was unable to compete for the level 7 team trophy.
“Both level 7 girls looked sharp,” said Murphy. “They were in high spirits after Meghan Merritt scored her first nine in level 7 and on the mentally tough event, beam.”
Merritt placed second on beam with a 9.05; third on vault with an 8.85; and fourth on bars with a 7.95, floor with an 8.95 and all around with a 34.8.
“Meghan performed a tumbling move, which she was having trouble at practice, and everyone cheered,” Murphy said. “It was a great moment for her and even the floor judge complimented her.”
Brooke Robinson also had a record-breaking performance.
“Brooke is learning how to compete better and better on each event. Lots of nerves, but they were calm in Tifton,” said Murphy.
Robinson placed second on vault with 9.0, floor with a 9.15 and all around with her best 35.975. She was third on bars with a 9.075 and beam with an 8.75.
“Brooke only had one mistake and she is already practicing hard to correct it for the Vidalia meet next weekend,”Murphy said.
