Soccer, tennis, rifle teams to compete today

MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County boys tennis team will try to get its first victory of the season and even its Region 1-AAAAA record when the Packers and Lady Packers play host to Valdosta at 4 p.m. today at the Jim Buck Goff Recreation Complex.

The Colquitt County soccer and rifle teams also will be in action today and will be on the road.

The young and inexperienced Packers tennis team lost 1-4 to strong Houston County on Friday in their season-opener and will try to rebound today.

Against the Bears, the Packers had Chris HarvinS at No. 1 singles, Zach Owen at No. 2 and Barclay Mitchell at No. 3.

The No. 1 doubles team had Bradley Michie, the Packers only senior, teaming up with Austin York.

The No. 2 doubles team, which came through with the team’s only point against Houston County, included Shaun Soderstrom and Zach Clifton.

The defending region champion Lady Packers breezed in their opener, winning 5-0 over Houston County.

Lindsay Jacobs played at No. 1, Landi Clark at No. 2 and Monique Murphy at No. 3.

Like the three singles players, the No. 1 doubles team is made up of seniors, Gracie Qurnell and Anne Yearta.

The No. 2 doubles team included Jessica Harvin and Savanna Lamon.

The Colquitt County High soccer teams will travel to Leeburg to meet Lee County and try to extend their winning streaks.

The Colquitt County girls have won five in a row after a 3-1 season-opening loss to Warner Robins.

The Lady Packers are led in scoring by freshman Alba Hernandez, who already has 13 goals this season. Senior Sha Wetherington has six and junior Kristin Hall has four.

The Lee County girls are 2-2 with some disparate scores.

The Lady Trojans have defeated Cairo 9-2 and Albany 16-1. They also have lost to Tift County 10-1 and have been blanked by Westover 3-0.

Colquitt County’s boys have defeated Dougherty 15-0 and Northside-Warner Robins 3-1 to get their record up to 3-3.

The Packers got two goals from Spencer Clayton and one from freshman Daniel Garcia in the victory over Northside on Friday.

Lee County will be a challenge. The Trojans are 4-0 and have defeated those opponents by a combined 16-2.

One of those victories came over Tift County by a 4-2 score.

The 6-0 Colquitt County High rifle team will travel to Fitzgerald for a match originally scheduled for last Thursday.

Colquitt County is one of the top teams in the state this season, with an average score of 1,148.7 per match.

The team is led senior Tori Dampier, who is averaging 288.2 and has a 293 and a 291 to her credit this season.

Sophomore Shontae Robinson is averaging 287.8.

Senior Yohann Brinson is averaging 286.2, but has shot the last two matches with a broken finger on his right hand.

Senior Jessica Corona is averaging 286.0, but has scores of 289, 290 and 291 in her last three matches.
