MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County middle school boys team got its only goal when a Coffee defender inadvertently knocked the ball into his own net, but it was enough for the youngest Packers to get a 1-0 win and complete a sweep of visiting Coffee Middle School on Saturday at Mack Tharpe Stadium at Tom White Field.

The middle school girls started the sweep with an 8-0 shutout that included three goals by Suzi Hernandez.

The victory raised the girls record to 2-0-1.

The Colquitt girls started slowly, going eight minutes before Hernandez knocked in her first goal of the damp morning match with Lauren Kelshaw getting the assist.

Hernandez followed seven minutes later with her second goal and Kelshaw scored later in the half to make it 3-0.

An own goal made it 4-0. Carly Banks scored to make it 5-0 and Lindsey Causey knocked in a goal to make it 6-0 with 11:03 left in the match. Anna Hall scored on a penalty kick with 7:41 remaining to put the Lady Packers up 7-0.

Hernandez completed the hat trick with the team’s final goal with 5:08 left.

“We got to play a lot of the younger players,” coach Ashley Hill said, noting that Sam Allen Jordan Hammack, Camille Sellers, Laura Hill Bannister, Hannah Fambro, Alex Norris, Avery Castellow, Hannah Vereen, Catie Statom and Robin Byington saw plenty of action.

Jordan Boyd started in the net, but moved to forward to allow Jessie Hester some time at goal keeper.

And while the Colquitt County middle school boys did not score their goal, it was a strong offensive push that forced it.

Tyler Dismuke got off a strong throw-in to the near post where Rich Tyndall battled two Coffee defenders.

As one defender attempted to clear the ball, he knocked it past his own keeper.

“The goal was set up by the offense doing the right thing and being in the right place,” coach Keith Summerlin said. “We didn’t put it in, but we forced them to put it in.”

The middle school boys also are 2-0-1. In their season opener last week against Lowndes, Josue Mundo bent a penalty kick around the wall and past the keeper for the Packers only goal in a 1-1 tie.

Colquitt had trailed after Lowndes scored just eight minutes into the match. The Packers also had a first-half goal called back in the first half.

After a 90-minute wait, the Packers met Hahira. Twelve minutes into the match, Brett Holden sent cross to Gustavo Zapote who punched it in for the only score of the match in a 1-0 Colquitt County victory.

Mundo, Holden and Zapote are all younger brothers of Colquitt County varsity players: Jesus Mundo, Beau Holden and Omar Zapote.

The middle school teams play at Valdosta on Tuesday.
