MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County junior varsity soccer teams remain unbeaten after taking a pair of games from Coffee High on Saturday at a damp and drizzly Mack Tharpe Stadium at Tom White Field.
The junior varsity Lady Packers and Packers are both 4-0 and will play host to Tift County on Monday. The girls will start at 5:30 p.m. The boys will start around 7 p.m.
Colquitt’s girls had defeated their three previous opponents by a combined score of 18-1.
Coffee gave the Lady Packers all they could handle. But the Lady Trojans had no answer for freshman Alba Hernandez, who scored her ninth and 10th junior varsity goals in the victory.
Hernandez, who also has 13 goals with the Colquitt County varsity, gave the Lady Packers a 1-0 lead with her goal at the 14 minute mark.
Coffee tied the match at the 30th minute.
But with 16 minutes remaining, Hernandez beat the Coffee keeper on a penalty kick for what proved to be the winning score.
“That was a good, hard-fought battle today,” Colquitt County coach Andy Chapura said. “We needed a game like that to show us we are not going to blow everybody out.”
Hernandez had four shots and Abbey Taylor six, “but we just couldn’t find the back of the net,” Chapura said.
Colquitt County’s junior varsity boys got two goals each from Trey Brooks, D.J. Vanzant and Julio Perez and a single goal from Hudson Wrenn to take out the Coffee boys 7-0. Beau Holden had three assists.
“That five or six for him in the last two games,” Colquitt County coach Mell Wier said of Holden. “We are moving the ball very well. It’s nice when your guys play as a team.”
