Girls tennis team wins season-opener

MOUTRIE — The Colquitt County girls tennis team opened the defense of it Region 1-AAAAA championship on Friday with an easy 5-0 victory over Houston County at the Jim Buck Goff Recreation Complex.
The Colquitt County boys, with little experience back this year, fell to the Bears, 1-4.
The Lady Packers won all five matches in straight sets and none were close.
Lindsay Jacobs picked up where she left on after an outstanding junior season and made quick work of Sarah Dunn, winning 6-0, 6-0.
Anne Yearta and Gracie Qurnell at No. 1 doubles also were off the court in a hurry after their 6-0, 6-0 win over Megan Oberle and Candace Hall.
Landi Clark, at No. 2 singles, took care of Heather Galdney 6-2, 6-2.
And Monique Murphy, the third senior singles player, won over Kayla Donaldson 6-2, 6-1.
The Lady Packers two youngest players — Jessica Harvin and Savanna Lamon — teamed up at No. 2 doubles and had little trouble with Elizabeth Brighton and Lindsay Winn, winning 6-0, 6-2.
The Lady Packers will try to win a second straight region match when they play host to Valdosta on Tuesday.
In extra girls matches on Friday, Dresden Melton lost 1-8; Laura Murphy won 8-5; Cara McCalley lost 2-7; Katy Weilbrenner and Carli Hester won in doubles, 8-4; and Kayla Kelly and Laura Robinson lost at doubles 1-8.
The Colquitt County boys won only at No. 2 doubles against a strong Houston County team.
At No. 1 singles, the Bears Cory Seay won over Chris Harvin 1-6, 0-6; at No. 2 singles, Ryan Bartz defeated Josh Owen 2-6, 1-6; and at No. 3 singles, Barclay Mitchell lost to Will Spence 1-6, 1-6.
At No. 1 doubles, Bradley Michie and Austin York fell to Zane Willey and Victor Wongk 4-6, 1-6.
The Packers won at No. 2 doubles behind the play of Shaun Soderstrom and Zach Clifton, who defeated Bowen Lane and Matt Heath 6-3, 6-4.
“Houston’s not a bad team,” Packers coach Grant Hammack said. “They’re solid at 1 and 2.
“But we didn’t play very well. I think our lack of experience showed. But we’re going to work hard. We may make some adjustments and we’ve got time to do that.
