Southwell gets first collegiate home run

MOULTRIE — Former Packer Will Southwell hit his first collegiate home run Friday in Georgia Southern’s 12-5 victory over Saint Joseph’s.

Earlier in the game, he had his first career RBI with a run-scoring double. Then, leading off the eighth inning, he hit a liner over the center field fence for the Eagles final run of the game.

Southwell is hittng .263 with three runs batted in for Georgia Southern, which lost to Jacksonville 5-2 on Tuesday to end a three-game winning streak.

The Eagles will meet Marshall at 7 p.m. Friday, 1:30 p.m. Saturday and 1:30 p.m. Sunday at J.I. Clements Stadium in Statesboro.

Former Packers teammate Aaron Eubanks has made three relief appearances for the Eagles without giving up a run.

The left-hander has faced six batters, striking out two and giving up a pair of hits. He has not walked a batter.

Of this and that:

• The Valdosta State baseball team defeated Georgia Southwestern 9-7 on Tuesday at Billy Grant Field in Valdosta.

Although former Packer Adam Anderson did not play in the game for the Blazers, his former Colquitt County teammate Jake Mobley went 1-for-4 while playing shortstop for the Hurricanes.

The Blazers are now 7-3. Georgia Southwestern is 8-8.

• The Johnson C. Smith women’s basketball team clinched the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Western Division championship on Tuesday with its 83-63 victory over Fayetteville State.

The division title is the first for the Lady Golden Bulls since Colquitt County’s Vanessa Taylor took over the program in 2001.

The team is now 18-8 overall and 13-2 in the conference.

The Lady Golden Bulls meet North Carolina Central on Saturday in their final regular-season game.

The CIAA tournament begins Monday.

• Former Packer John Michael Hall scored 12 points as the Abraham Baldwin College men’s basketball team defeated Oxford College 82-73 on Monday.

The Stallions are assured of hosting a first-round state playoff game next Tuesday.

• Moultrie’s Lamar Brooks was the top overall shooter at the recent Azalea Open Skeet Shoot at the Palatka (Fla.) Skeet Club.

In a field of more than 115 shooters, Brooks shot a 396 out of 400 clay targets in the .410, 20-, 29- and 12-gauge events.

• The field is nearly complete for the Pot o’ Gold Pro-Am to be held March 10-12 at Sunset Country Club.

The tournament will be the first run by Bob Windom, who took over as the club’s golf professional last year.

This year’s event will mark the 51st time Sunset has played host to the Pot o’ Gold.

• Moss Farms will play host to the annual Georgia All-Star banquet and diving meet on March 4-5.
