MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County middle schools soccer teams came back from a visit to Hahira Middle School on Saturday with a pair of wins and a pair of ties.
The Colquitt County middle school girls defeated Lowndes 14-0 to open their season, but could not manage a goal in their match with Hahira, which ended in a 0-0 tie.
The middle school boys tied Lowndes 1-1 in their first match, then used a Brett Holden goal to beat Hahira 1-0.
The middle school Lady Packers led 5-0 just nine minutes into their match with Lowndes girls and were up 8-0 at the half. Despite using reserves much of the second half, the Lady Packers scored six more times after intermission.
“In that first game, we played a young and inexperienced team,” said coach Ashley Hill. “After we got up, I had mostly sixth-graders in.”
The goals came in quick succession in the opening half.
Suzi Hernandez scored just two minutes into the match and Lindsey Causey scored back-to-back at the four- and five-minutes marks.
Three minutes later Anna Hall put Colquitt County up 4-0.
Two minutes later, sixth-grader Camille Sellers got the first of her two goals and just 120 seconds later Chelsey Partain scored to make it 6-0.
Sellers added her second goal of the half at the 18-minute mark and Sam Allen’s goal five minutes later enabled Colquitt County to take an 8-0 lead into intermission.
Hernandez started the second half as she did the first, scoring quickly to put the Lady Packers up 9-0. Lori Sherling’s goal made it 10-0.
Lacey Webb scored two goals, at the 31- and 33-minute marks to put Colquitt County up 12-0.
Sixth-graders Jordan Hammock and Lauren Kelshaw scored the final two goals.
In the second match, Colquitt County ran up against a more skilled team, Hill said.
“Jessie Hester did a good job at goal keeper and our defense did a fine job,” Hill said. “We had the ball on their side 80 percent of the time, but just couldn’t put it in.”
The middle school girls roster includes eighth-graders, Suzi Hernandez, Anna Hall, Carly Banks, Lori Sherling, Hannah Vereen, Chelsey Partain and Morgan Hayes; seventh-graders, Lindsey Causey, Laura Hill Bannister, Karlie Brown, Lacey Webb, Jordan Boyd, Avery Castellow and Jessie Hester; and sixth-graders Alex Norris, Sam Allen, Jordan Hammock, Catie Statom, Lauren Kelshaw, Rebecca Clark, Camille Sellers, Robin Byington and Hannah Fambro.
The middle school teams will play their home-openers next Saturday against Coffee.
