Lady Pack wins; Packers fall

MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County girls basketball team began building some momentum for next week’s Region 1-AAAAA tournament by defeating Bainbridge in the Decatur County Memorial Coliseum on Friday, but Colquitt County’s boys struggles continue.
Colquitt’s girls had little trouble in the opener, defeating the Lady Cats by 19 points for the second time this season.
The score when the two former region opponents met in Moultrie in December was 64-45.
On Friday, the Lady Packers won 68-49.
Colquitt got 15 points each from freshman Nicolle Sutton and sophomore Taquella Coates, and Laquita Smith, another sophomore, added 11.
The Lady Packers shot the ball 64 times and had 38 rebounds in raising their record to 16-8 overall.
“Those are the numbers we’re supposed to have,” Lady Packers coach Joe Parker said.
Parker also said he was pleased with his reserves, who got some extended playing time.
Ashley Stafford had eight points, Jessica Lemus and Nikki Hudson each had six points, Dorothy Strong and Alexa Isaacs each had three and Ashley Patillo had two.
Thomas was 3-or-4 and Smith 2-for-3 in 3-point attempts.Coates was 7-for-11 from the field. Stafford and Coates each had seven rebounds. Lemus had six.
Lemus, Stafford and Strong will play their final regular-season game at the Gladys Espy Memorial Gymnasium tonight and will be honored with the six senior members of the Colquitt County boys team between the games with Thomas County Central.
The Packers trailed the Bainbridge boys by just a point heading into the final quarter before being outscored 21-13 in the final eight minutes and falling 63-56.
The loss was the sixth in a row for the Packers, who fall to 11-12.
Antwan Tuff led the Packers with 20 points. Jeremy DeBruce added 11, James Trimble had nine, Andrew Wallace had seven, Duke Banks had five and Amar Parikh and Rashawn Melvin each had two.
Ray Dominquez led Bainbridge with 15 points.
The Colquitt County seniors are Tuff, Parikh, DeBruce, Trimble, Ronald Wilson and Kamari Peterson.
