Middle school wrestlers second in Leesburg

MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County middle school wrestling team turned in its best performance of the season on Saturday, finishing second in the six-team Trojan Duals held at Lee County High School.

The tournament also drew teams from Lee County, Turner County, Irwin County, Tift County and Woodland Middle School in Cartersville.

Woodland took first place.

Twelve Packers won at least one match.

“It was a real good day for us,” said Colquitt County coach Travis Torbert. “There was some good competition. The kids had some pretty tough battles.

“Some had to wrestle five matches.”

Kenny Ashby had the best day among the Colquitt County middle school wrestlers, winning four of his five matches, all by pins.

Tyler Dismuke was 3-1 with three pins. Taylor Huite also was 3-1, with one pin. Beau Weathers was 3-2 with a pair of pins.

Chris Walsh was 2-1, suffering his first loss of the season, falling to a wrestler from Irwin County by one point. One of his two victories was by a pin.

Jacob Hall was 2-2 with on pin. Coty Thomas was 2-3 with two pins.

Winning one match were Zach Cannon (1-0, one pin), Michael Welch (1-3), Blake Powell (1-3, one pin), Jesse Goff (1-4, one pin) and Bryce Giddens (1-4, one pin).

The middle school wrestlers will travel to Thomasville to meet Thomas County Central and Lee County at 4 p.m. today.
