Middle divers heading to Marist

MOULTRIE —The Colquitt County middle schools diving team will travel to Atlanta on Friday to compete in the War Eagle Middle School Invitational.
Coach Ed Goodman will take Henry Norman, Ana Jiminez, Ann Perry Blank and Kelsey Goodman of Colquitt County; Jillian Braun, from Deerfield-Windsor in Albany; and Dalan Wedgeworth from Tift County.

• The Abraham Baldwin College men’s basketball team won its fourth game in a row on Saturday, defeating Truett-McConnell 91-78. With former Packer John Michael Hall on board, ABAC is now 9-8.
The Stallions met Atlanta Metro on Wednesday at home.
• The Johnson C. Smith University women’s basketball team defeated Bowie State 70-61 on Tuesday to raise its record to 9-6 overall and 4-0 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
The Lady Golden Bulls are coached by former Packerette Vanessa Taylor.
• Clint Chafin is already working on this year’s annual Minor League Baseball Reunion, but recently received some sad news.
Tex Young, one of the biggest supporters of the reunion and a regular at the annual event, died in Tallahassee on New Year’s Eve.
Young was in the Cleveland Indians organization and played in the old Georgia State and Georgia-Florida league. He also was a graduate of Troy State and coached high school baseball for 27 years. A member of the Florida High School Coaches Association, he was the state’s Coach of the Year in 1971.
• The first STA-BIL Winternationals Lawn Mower Races will be held the weekend of Feb. 4-5.
On Saturday, Feb. 4, the Florida Lawnracing Association will play host to its first “Mow Down” at the Maxville Motor Speedway in Maxville, Fla.
On Sunday, Feb. 5, racing moves to the Roy Davis Memorial Park in Berlin, home of the Georgia Lawn Mower Racing Association.
The Roy Davis Memorial Park is located just off Georgia Highway 133.
Registration will be from 9 a.m.-noon, followed by a drivers meeting at 12:30 p.m. Practice and racing will begin at 1 p.m.
Racing lawn mowers will compete in six classes with top speeds reaching 60 mph.
The STA-BIL National Lawn Mower Racing Series has been televised on ESPN2, the Discovery Channel and on the sitcom “Home Improvement.”
• Worth County has hired former Riverwood High head coach Harris Rainbow to succeed Harold Brantley as its head football coach.
Rainbow, a Columbus native and graduate of Wheeler High, was the defensive line coach for three seasons at Oconee County High, which went 42-10 and won the 1999 Class AAA state championship under Jeff Herron.
He also was the assistant head coach and offensive coordiator at Wheeler High before taking over at Riverwood, which had not won a game before he took over. Rainbow led Riverwood to a 9-21 record in his three seasons there.
Worth County went 1-9 last season and has not made the playoffs since 2002.
• Valdosta High could announce its new head football coach next Monday. Rick Darlington resigned Nov. 16.
