MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County High basketball teams set up a pair of key Region 1-AAAAA games against Tift County on Friday by sweeping Coffee High on Tuesday at the Gladys Espy Gymnasium.

The Lady Packers survived a 16-straight-point outburst by the Coffee girls in the second quarter to down the Lady Trojans 66-53.

The victory raises the Lady Packers record to 11-5 overall and keeps them unbeaten at 3-0 in the Region.

Colquitt’s girls are the only unbeaten team in Region 1-AAAAA after Lowndes defeated Tift County 45-37 on Tuesday.

The Lady Devils are 1-1 and the Vikettes are now 2-1.

Colquitt’s boys trailed from early in the first quarter until taking the lead for good on a basket by Jeremy DeBruce with 1:10 remaining and held on for 64-58 victory.

The Packers, now 9-4 overall, are 2-1 in the region.

Tift County’s boys, ranked No. 7 in Class AAAAA in the state, are 2-0 in the region after knocking off Lowndes 60-51 on Tuesday.

The loss drops the Vikings, tied for No. 10 in the state, to 2-1 in the region, tied with the Packers for second place.

The Packers trailed Coffee by nine at the half and slowly made their way back into the game, cutting the deficit to four heading into the fourth quarter.

The Packers took their first lead since going ahead 3-1 just two minutes into the game when Andrew Wallace scored and hit a free throw to put his team up 57-56.

The Trojans’ Demetrius Williams answered with a basket, but when DeBruce scored at the other end, the Packers were ahead to stay.

The margin might have been greater had the Packers been better at the foul line, especially in the final 53 seconds.

Colquitt hit just 14-of-29 from the line for the game.

Wallace led the Packers with a season-high 20 points. James Trimble added 17 and Antwan Tuff rebounded to score 14.

DeBruce had seven, Amar Parikh had a 3-pointer, Orion Ponder scored two and Corey Goss had a free throw.

Williams had 20 points to lead the Trojans, who fall to 11-7 overall and 1-2 in the region. Quam Hancock added 10.

The Lady Packers were cruising along with a 50-26 lead with under three minutes left in the half when Coffee went on a 16-point tear.

But Colquitt outscored the Lady Trojans 16-13 in the final quarter to get the victory. Despite pressure much of the night, the Lady Packers turned the ball over just 13 times, a season-low.

The Lady Packers got a career-high 20 points from sophomore Taquella Coates, and Jessica Lemus turned in her most productive game of the season, adding 15.

Nikki Hudson had eight, Nicole Thomas and Dorothy Strong each had seven, Ashley Stafford added six, Laquita Smith had three and Tiffany Troupe had a free throw.

Stafford had nine rebounds to lead the Lady Packers.

Coates and Lemus each had eight. Stafford also had five assists.

Shan Green had 16, Jaquayla Berry had 14 and Troyanna Vickers had 10 for the Lady Trojans.

Also on Friday, Coffee will travel to Houston County and Valdosta will be at Lowndes.
