Seventh-graders drop two to Tift County

MOULTRIE — Antavious Green got loose under the basket and scored an easy layup with 11 seconds remaining to put the Tift County seventh-grade boys basketball team up by a point and added two free throws eight seconds later as the youngest Blue Devils defeated Colquitt County 41-38 on Monday at the Willie J. Williams Middle School gymnasium.
Colquitt County, which had trailed since a Green basket gave the Blue Devils a 14-13 lead with just under two minutes left in the first half, had just taken a 38-37 lead on a jumper by Cole Pitts with 26 seconds left in the game.
But Tift County got the ball down the court quickly and Green took a pass just to the left in the basket. His uncontested shot went off the glass and in.
The Tift County seventh-graders are now 8-1, with their only loss coming to Newbern.
Monday’s first game was no contest as Tift County scored the first 14 points of the game and rolled to an easy 39-8 victory that kept the Lady Devils undefeated on the season.
Raven Denson led Tift County with 12 points. Quadreka Burgess and Briana Rich each had six and Blakely McClellan, Jessica Covington, Kiara Bennett and Kristyn Wells each had two.
Brittany Taylor and Bria Wallace each had three points for Colquitt County Kenisha Seay had two.
The loss drops the Colquitt County girls to 5-4 on the season.
In the boys game, Colquitt County jumped out to a 9-4 lead after the first quarter and extended the margin to 13-8 on a pair of Quan Daniels free throws with 3:31 left in the half.
But Tift County scored the final nine points of the quarter, including five by Green, to take a 17-13 lead at the break.
Tift County’s lead reached 12 when a Green scored with 3:08 left in the game to put the Blue Devils up 37-25.
But the Packers scored the game’s next 13 points to take the brief lead.
Pitts and Trey DeBruce each had six points in the Colquitt run. Cornelius James had a 3-pointer and added basket at 1:18 left in the game that pulled the Packers to within a point.
Green led all scorers with 14 points. Rod Ross added eight for Tift County.
James had 13 and Pitts nine to lead Colquitt County. DeBruce and Tevin King each had six and Daniels added four.
