MOULTRIE — A member of a record-setting Atlanta-based hip-hop group held a barbecue for friends and fans Saturday at Walker’s Classic Cuts and Styles.
Carlos Walker, known as “Shawty Lo” from the group D4L, was in Moultrie to visit family and spend time with fans of the group. His cousin, Demetrius “Meatball” Walker, runs the barber shop, and his parents and other family members live in town.
The group had a concert in Albany Saturday night, and Walker said he stopped by Moultrie to see his family. The free barbecue was “done out of love for the community” and allowed him to meet fans in Moultrie.
Up-and-coming artists on D4L Records were also in attendance at the barbecue, Walker said. Walker, who is chief executive officer of the group and D4L Records, handed out T-shirts and CD’s and gave autographs to those in attendance.
Walker said he formed the four-member group in 2003 in Atlanta, and their song “Laffy Taffy” from their debut CD, “Down For Life,” is currently the number one song on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song also set a SoundScan record for the most digital downloads, with over 175,000 downloads, in one week, and the song has sold over 510,000 digital copies in 12 weeks.
Walker’s father, Carl Walker, said he was proud of the success his son has had so far and feels he is representing the South Georgia, Atlanta and the state of Georgia well. He was going to see D4L perform for the first time at the Albany show Saturday.
D4L, made up of Shawty Lo, Fabo, Mook-B and Stoney are all from Atlanta, Carlos Walker said. The group garnered national attention with their first single, “Betcha Can’t Do It Like Me,” before the success of “Laffy Taffy.”
