MOULTRIE — When the Colquitt County ninth-grade basketball team raced to a 14-11 first-quarter lead over visiting Bainbridge on Thursday at the Espy Gymnasium, it appeared the Packers might be poised to avenge an earlier loss to the Bearcats in Bainbridge.
The Packers fell behind in the second quarter, but still had the Bearcats in sight at halftime, trailing 30-24.
But the Bearcats just dominated the Packers in the second half, outscoring their hosts 35-15 to take a 65-39 vicory.
Bainbridge had won the earlier meeting, 66-41.
The Packers had just one player in double figures, with Eric Key getting 10, including four of his team’s six fourth-quarter points.
Jameil Tyson added seven. Brian Berl, C.J. Copeland and Trendon Jones each had six and Jarret Sutton and Dominique Hadley each had two points.
The freshmen, now 5-4 after opening the season with three straight victories, will play host to Lowndes at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 11.
The Colquitt County middle school basketball teams return to court today for the first time since the holiday break.
The eighth-grade Packers and Lady Packers will travel to Hahira.
The eighth-grade girls are 2-5 this season. The eighth-grade Packers are 3-4.
The seventh-graders will meet Hahira at the Willie J. Williams Middle School gymnasium today with the girls starting at 4 p.m. and the boys following at about 5:15 p.m. The seventh-grade girls are 4-3. The seventh-grade boys are 5-2.
