MOULTRIE — Fire destroyed a house on South Boulevard Thursday afternoon. All of the people inside the house escaped unharmed.
Sam Stevens, a member of the Southside Volunteer Fire Department, said firefighters were called to the fire at 1313 South Blvd. at 11:13 a.m. The initial call was that a mattress inside the house was on fire, but the first firefighter at the scene said flames were showing through the roof.
The fire was heavily involved when firefighting trucks from the Southside, Northside and Culbertson volunteer fire departments arrived, Stevens said. A strong wind accelerated the fire throughout the residence before the firefighters were able to get it under control.
The house’s tenant, Jessica Brinson, said she was at work in Ashburn when she was notified of the fire. She rushed back to Moultrie and found her husband and two young daughters got out of the house safely.
The husband attempted to put the fire out, which started in the a back bedroom, but Brinson said he was unsuccessful in doing so. He grabbed the couple’s youngest daughter, who had been hiding under a bed, and evacuated the house.
Stevens said the house was a total loss, and Brinson said she and her family lost everything. The family met with the Red Cross of Colquitt County Thursday afternoon to arrange temporary shelter.
Brinson said she was told the fire was ignited by faulty wiring in an outlet in the rear bedroom.
