Tuff’s 37 points lead Packers victory

ALBANY — If Antwan Tuff had any trouble playing for the first time in Albany Civic Center, it sure didn’t show.
Tuff scored 37 points to lead the Packers to an 81-72 victory over Rockdale County in a consolation matchup in the Good Life City Classic.
The Packers won two of three games in the tournament, the first two of which were played at Albany High.
Some players say it is difficult to adjust to a large venue after playing primarily in smaller high school gymnasiums.
But Tuff connected on 6-of-13 3-point attempts and 6-of-12 in 2-point shots and hit 7-of-9 free throws for the largest point production by a Packer in a number of years.
The 6-foot-1 senior guard had 19 in the first half and added 18 in the second.
His biggest basket came in the third quarter when the Bulldogs had whittled a 15-point Packers lead to seven with 1:14 left.
Tuff found himself alone in the left corner and his fourth long, arcing 3-pointer hardly disturbed the net on its way though.
He added three more from beyond the arc in the fourth quarter as the Packers dealt the Bulldogs their third loss in a row.
The victory raises the Packers record to 5-3 as they prepare to meet East Gadsden High of Havana, Fla., at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Gladys Espy Gymnasium.
The Packers were coming off a disappointing 57-51 loss to Dougherty last Saturday that dropped them into the tournament’s losers bracket.
Westover and Dougherty met for the tournament championship late Tuesday.
The Packers hit 45 percent from the floor, going 29-of-64.
“We shot the ball a little tonight,” Packers coach Kirven Davis said with a bit of a smile. “But we also did a good job defensively.”
Rockdale had trouble with the Packers pressure throughout the game.
“And led to a lot of transition baskets for us,” Davis said.
Colquitt never trailed in the game and led by nine after the first quarter and by 10 at the half.
After weathering the Bulldog run midway through the third quarter, the Packers maintained a 10-point edge heading into the final quarter.
And while Tuff led the Packers, Colquitt also got 15 points from James Trimble and 13 from Jeremy DeBruce, who had the team’s other two 3-pointers.
Andrew Wallace had six, but hurt his knee after being fouled by Rockdale’s Frank Culbreath while driving for a layup with 4:40 left in the third quarter.
It was unclear how severe Wallace’s injury was, although he was able to walk off the court. He did not return to the game.
Orion Ponder and Kamari Peterson each had three points and Ronald Wilson and Amar Parikh each had one basket.
Colquitt turned the ball over just 17 times and its margin of victory could have been greater if it had been able to hit its free throws with some consistency. The Packers converted just 13-of-31.
But Davis was proud of how his team responded to the loss to Monroe, a game the Packers led in fourth quarter before falling by six points.
“I thought we showed a lot of character, coming off a tough game,” Davis said.
