MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County boys basketball team shot well from the field, crashed the boards and hit its free throws and the result was a 74-58 victory over Lee County on Friday in the Packers opening game in the WALB Basketball Classic at Albany High.

The victory sends the Packers to a second-round game at 7 tonight against the winner of the Monroe-Southwest of Macon game that began at 8:30 p.m. Friday.

The victory was the second in a row for the Packers, who raised their record to 4-2.

Colquitt jumped out to a 19-12 first-quarter lead, but extended the advantage to 20 at the half.

The Region 1-AAAA Trojans made a run in the third quarter, but the Packers outscored them 23-16 in the fourth quarter to get the tournament victory.

The Packers had four players in double-figures, led by Antwan Tuff, who had 17 and raised his team-leading scoring average to 13.2 points a game.

Andrew Wallace had 14 and Jeremy DeBruce and James Trimble each had 12.

The game was the fourth in a row in which Trimble has scored an even dozen points. He also led the Packers with 14 rebounds.

“We dominated the glass,” said Packers coach Kirven Davis. “And we made our free throws (78 percent).”

Channing Hudson had six points, Dannie Hunt had five and Amar Parikh, Ryshawn Melvin, Orion Ponder and Kamari Peterson each had two.

“We played our best game defensively,” Davis said. “And we shot well from the field.”

The Packers have won four of five since a season-opening loss at Thomasville.

Trimble (11.8) and DeBruce (11.0) also are averaging in double-figures for the Packers.

Wallace is close behind, averaging 9.7 points after back-to-back games of 14 against both Worth County and Lee County.
