Davis: Players buying into new program

MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County boys basketball team will take a 3-2 record into today’s 7 p.m. meeting with Lee County in the WALB Basketball Classic at Albany High as the Packers continue to get used to a new coach and a new philosophy.
First-year coach Kirven Davis says “We’re getting there,” as the 2005 portion of the schedule winds down.
“It’s taken some getting used to,” Davis said Thursday while watching film in his office at the Gladys Espy Gymnasium.
“They were used to half-court ball. But they are buying in and that helps a lot.”
The Packers have defeated Bain-bridge once and Worth County twice and have lost to Thomasville and Dougherty.
One get the feeling that Davis would like nothing better than to meet the Bulldogs and Trojans again.
“I don’t feel like we’ve been beat yet,” he said, saying that poor free throw shooting cost his team dearly in both of its losses.
In the 64-56 loss at Dougherty last Friday, the Packers hit just 9-of-25 free throws. In the 83-73 loss to Thomasville, the Packers converted just 16-of-30.
Lee County will bring a 4-3 record into the game will be present the Packers will a challenge in its tall front court.
The Packers will counter will 6-foot-5 Andrew Wallace and 6-foot-3 James Trimble.
Wallace is coming off his most productive game of the season, a 14-point effort last Saturday against Worth County at home.
Trimble has scored 54 points in the last four games and has impress his coach with his ability to improve.
“I’ve been throwing a lot of things at him,” Davis said.
Orion Ponder, Jeremy DeBruce and Antwan Tuff complete the starting lineup.
