MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County High wrestling team added two more victories on Tuesday to raise its record to 9-2, but faces the biggest challenge of its season beginning today.
The Packers beat Westover 67-12 and Terrell County 70-12 on Wednesday at Westover with 11 of their wrestlers winning two matches.
After catching their breath on Thursday, the Packers will take part in the Hornet Invitational at Cook High School today and Saturday.
“We’ll be facing some of the toughest competition in the area,” said Packers coach Randall Balch. “To win on Saturday, it is going to take five good matches in 24 hours.
“We haven’t been under that kind of pressure yet.”
The first whistle will sound at 5:30 p.m. today in the tournament, which will finish on Saturday.
Among the teams entered in the tournament are Region 1-AAAAA opponents Valdosta and Tift County.
“This will give us a chance to see how we stack up against some of the other teams in the region,” the Packers first-year coach said.
The Packers should take a little momentum into the match.
After taking three victories at the Pineland gymnasium on Saturday, the Packers had little trouble with Westover and Terrell County on Wednesday on the road.
Nathan Fowler, Jacorey Dillard, Chris Barham, Tah’drick Enoch, Tim Adams, Trey Brooks, Jesus Mundo, Dustin Kastelic, Rey Juan, Michael Jenkins and Antonio Sutton each won both of their matches.
Tyler Brooks was 1-0 and Shaun Jiminez was 1-1.
Balch was impressed with Kastelic’s performance against Westover.
“He was losing 12-4 and came back and pinned him,” Balch said. “That was an excellent, excellent match he wrestled.”
Balch said Jenkins also had a good afternoon.
“The scores make it look like he had an easy time,” Balch said. “But he wrestled some big boys.”
The Packers continue to improve, Balch said.
“I’m excited,” he said. “We’re doing some good things. We really came together as a team (at Westover). Everybody was motivated and pulling for everybody else.
“It’s amazing how the kids are picking up what we want them to do.”
Following the Cook tournament, the Packers will travel to Bainbridge on Dec. 15 before taking off for the Christmas holiday.
The Packers will travel to Tifton on Jan. 4 to meet the Tift County on Houston County in another match against tough region opponents.
“We’ll have to work hard over the holiday,” Balch said.
