MOULTRIE — Police are looking for two black men who were seen leaving the scene of an accident that left a truck on fire Tuesday night.

About 9 p.m., a witness said he saw the men, one of whom was apparently drunk, stumble away from a Mazda B2200 pickup that was on fire in the west ditch of the West Bypass.

Aaron Nagy, 17, of Moultrie, said he was traveling northbound on the West Bypass when he noticed the truck in the ditch and stopped to help.

“One of the guys was standing by the roadway and the other was in the truck trying to get out,” Nagy said. “I saw the truck was on fire and called the police.”

Nagy said the men left the scene, heading toward the Shy Manor Apartment complex in Northwest Moultrie.

The Moultrie Fire Deparment extinguished the fire that charred the driver’s side front quarter panel of the truck. The tire was also melted.

Moultrie Police Officer Tim Wilson, who was on the scene, said the truck ran off the road and into the 7- to 10-foot-deep ditch, then caught fire.

The truck belongs to Thomas B. Sirmans Jr., of Hahira, who allegedly called his father shortly before the accident, saying that he needed a ride because he was too drunk, Wilson said. It was unclear if Sirmans was involved in the accident.

As of presstime, police were trying to determine if the truck had been stolen.
