For Aug. 27

Holding us back

“How can Colquitt County move ahead if the County Commission is divided on so many issues.”

Good stories

“I thoroughly enjoy the feature stories that your reporters at The Observer write. I especially liked one about Mrs. Ola Matthews. It really does me good when I read of a senior citizen that is full of spit and vinegar. Also, I like to read Dwain Walden’s columns. I’m sure there’s a sizeable age difference between him and me but it sounds almost like we grew up together. I know that you have to print the bad kinds of things, too, but at least you give us some smiles to go with it all.”

Education mess

“The more I hear about our education mess, the more I respected those dedicated teachers who hang in there and try to make sense out of all of it. The other day I talked to a teacher who said she went home, sat down and cried. This is a veteran teacher. God bless you all.”

Illegal contract

“Now why would Mr. Marlowe want to withdraw from something he legally does not have? He has no contract to withraw from. The chairman and the other three commissioners have allowed the administrator to work now for eight months without a ‘legal’ contract. Do we legally have an administrator? If not, then why are the taxpayers paying his salary, paying for a vehicle and perks, and why are all of our county employees working in an environment where they all fear for their jobs?”

Topsy-turvy

“What is wrong with this picture? An Episcopalian priest leaves his wife and children for a man and is promoted to bishop. An Alabama Supreme Court Justice puts the Ten Commandments on display and gets in trouble.”

Banking solution

“It seems that much of the attacks on Hispanics has to do with the fact that they carry so much cash on them. I’ve been told that they don’t open bank accounts because many of them are illegal and could not do so. For the sake of public safety, could not some kind of banking system be set up for them whether they are legal or not? Or would we hear from those who say that is condoning crime because they shouldn’t be here in the first place?”

Industrial park

“What’s the latest on an industrial park? Ever since the hoopla about that proposed site on the south end of the county, we haven’t heard much about it.”

What’s historic?

“Outside of the courthouse and the old Carnegie Library (which is now a law office) is downtown Moultrie all that historic? Sometimes we confuse something being old with something being historic. Rocks can be old and not historic unless George Washington sat on it to discuss war plans. I appreciate history as much as the next guy. I also appreciate planned development and I realize that sometimes we have to compromise a little bit to get progress.”

Shock therapy

“I think we should shock local officials occasionally and show up in large numbers at government meetings. There doesn’t have to be a burning issue. Let’s just let them know that this is our government and we are there to listen and to help where possible. We have the right to do that, but seldom take advantage of it.”
