Ester Durrell Hancock

MOULTRIE — Ester Durrell Hancock, 68, of 1319 South Blvd., Moultrie, died Thursday, Oct. 28, 2004, at his residence.

Graveside rites will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, at Bridge Creek Cemetery with the Rev. Alan Tillman and the Rev. Quenten Barnes officiating. Casketbearers will be David Hall, Joe Zeigler, Roy Paulk, Stacey Thaggard and William Wilson.

Mr. Hancock was born July 14, 1936, in Colquitt County to the late Bessie Wisham Hancock and the late James Claude Hancock. He was a retired farmer and a member of New Elm Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Alice Jean Fulghum Hancock of Moultrie; two sons, Thomas Durrell Hancock of Moultrie and Michael Todd Hancock and wife Tonya of Doerun; a stepson, Dennis Everett Fulghum of Moultrie; a brother, James Claude Hancock Jr. and wife Sue of Moultrie; two sisters, Nancy Hancock Horne of Moultrie and Lethia Hancock Thompson and husband L.A. of Dothan, Ala.; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, James Monroe Hancock; and two sisters, Myrtle Lee Glover and Eunice Whitfield Allegood.

Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Friday at Cobb Funeral Chapel.

The family may be contacted at the residence of Nancy Horne, 1925 Second St. S.E. in Moultrie.

Joan Matz

MOULTRIE — Joan Matz, 67, of Moultrie, died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2004, in Doerun.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Interment will be in Michigan. Terry L. Adams will officiate.

Miss Matz was born Sept. 28, 1937, in Wisconsin, the daughter of Arnold E. Matz and Vertie Milam Matz, both deceased. She was a homemaker and a missionary for Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Survivors include two brothers, Arnold Matz and wife Lydia of Florida and Tony Matz and wife Colleen of Michigan; and a sister, Arlene Rietz and husband Karl of Brazil.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Frank Matz.

Bertie Orea Hammacke Jerkins

CHATTAHOOCHEE, Fla. — Mrs. Bertie Orea Hammacke Jerkins, 101, died Oct. 27, 2004, at her home in Chattahoochee.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, at the First Baptist Church in Chattahoochee. Interment will be at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, on Highway 90, east of Chattahoochee.

Mrs. Jerkins was born in Houston County, Ala., on Dec. 14, 1902. She moved to Chattahoochee in 1950 from Bristol, Fla. She was retired as cashier of the Grey Kitchen with the Florida State Hospital in Chattahoochee, and she was a member of the Bethlehem Baptist Church in Houston County.

She was preceded in death by her husband, W.T. Jerkins; a son, James M. Jerkins; seven sisters and two brothers; and a great-great-great-grandson, Jackson Lane Wamble.

Survivors include four daughters, Melvaline Rabon of Chattahoochee, Earlene Johnson and husband Edward Sr. of Moultrie, Ga., Catherine Taylor and husband A.J. of Magnolia, Texas, and Graceville, Fla., Martha Sellars and husband Jimmy of Sneads, Fla.; a daughter-in-law, Faye Jerkins of Bristol, Fla.; grandchildren, Sarah Beth Robertson and husband Sam, Ed Johnson Jr. and wife Chris, Sandra Smith, Shelia Johnson, Roger Jerkins and wife Cathy, Diane Kinsey and friend Bob Davis, Bonita Grantham and husband Charles, Debra Paul and husband Mike, Lucretia Farris and husband Harry, Beverly Lane and husband Jerry, Kevin Ward, Bill Houghtaling and wife Deann, Doug Fogleman and wife Gloria, Marvin Young and wife Tammy, Theo Young and Chris Centerfitt and wife Tammy; step-grandchildren, Roy Samuel Rabon Jr. and wife Yvonne, Maggie Funderburk and husband Robert, Dianne Anderson and husband Larry and Debra Mattern and husband Phillip; 37 great-grandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren; 29 great-great-grandchildren; seven stepgreat-great-grandchildren; one great-great-great-grandchild; four stepgreat-great-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends and have viewing from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Oct. 29.

Geneva Hunt Alford

BREA, Calif. — Geneva Hunt Alford, 69, of Brea, Calif., formerly of Moultrie, died Thursday, Oct. 28, 2004, at Kindred Hospital.

Arrangements will be announced by Luke Strong and Son Mortuary.
