William Leon Pippin Jr.

ATLANTA — William Leon Pippin Jr., 61, of 1160 Angelo Court, Atlanta, died Friday, July 18, 2003, at Haven House Hospice in Atlanta.

Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday, July 21, at Trinity Baptist Church, Moultrie, with burial in Westview Cemetery. The Rev. Michael Helms will officiate. Casketbearers will be Jules Paulk, Erle Taylor, Warren Taylor, Charles Cannon IV, Kristof Hillebrand, Glenn Delk, Fredrick Beaty and Frank Roberts. Honorary casketbearers will be Al T. Hays, Duncan Beard, Hampton Morris and Charles M. Hillebrand.

Mr. Pippin was born Feb. 2, 1942, in Moultrie to Margaret Ione Pidcock and William Leon Pippin. He was self-employed as a development consultant, and he was a Baptist. He received a bachelor’s degree from Tulane University and a master’s from Wake Forest University, and he had completed the Ph.D program at Vanderbilt University.

He was chairman emeritus of the Merrie-Woode Foundation Inc. in Sapphire, N.C.; a member of the board of trustees of the Highland Biological Foundation Inc. in Highland, N.C.; a founder of the Central Georgia Historical Railway Society; a past member of the board of directors of the Georgia Northern Railway Company in Norfolk, Va.; and a member of The Commerce Club in Atlanta and the Chattooga Club in Cashiers, N.C.

Survivors include his wife, Charlotte Luno Pippin of Atlanta; one son, William Leon Pippin III of Atlanta; two sisters, Margaret Pippin Crawford (Mrs. Neil) of Ponte Vedra, Fla., and Frances Ann Pippin Hillebrand of Moultrie.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Margaret Ione Pidcock and William Leon Pippin Sr.; a daughter, Charlotte Sarah Pippin, and a brother, Charles Taylor Pippin.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. today at Cobb Funeral Chapel.

Calvin C.R. Kirkwood Sr.

MOULTRIE — Calvin C.R. Kirkwood Sr., 76, died July 16, 2003, in Tallahassee, Fla. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today, July 20, in the Chapel of Hart’s Mortuary, 765 Cherry St., Macon. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Macon.

Mr. Kirkwood was retired from Georgia Power after 39 years of service.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred Kirkwood of Moultrie; son, Jerry Kirkwood of Forsyth; daughters, Jan Cook of Estille, S.C., Pam Auspin of Thomasville and Carol Rogers of Moultrie; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many other extended family members.

Hart’s Mortuary of Macon has charge of arrangements.



Misty Irene Carter Barnes

MOULTRIE — Misty Irene Carter Barnes, 22, of 1241 Third St. S.E., died Friday, July 18, 2003, in Tifton.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 22, at Baker Funeral Home. Burial will be at Baker/Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Steve Comer will officiate.

Miss Barnes was born July 30, 1980, in Colquitt County to Sarah Maelizabeth Hasty and the late Delmas Barnes. She was a Baptist.

Survivors include her mother, Sarah Maelizabeth Hasty; one son, Jared Pinales; two daughters, Brianna Romero and Nautika Pinales; two brothers, Chris Carter and Scotty Barnes; two sisters, Jennifer Barnes and Brandi Barnes; one niece and three nephews, Alyssa, Nathan, Alex and Carlos; two grandmothers, Alma Hasty and Mamie Barnes; several aunts and uncles; and a special cousin, Angie Mata.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her grandfathers, J.D. Hasty and Delmas Homer Barnes, and by her great-grandparents, Eli and Daisy Miller.

Visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. Monday, July 21, at her residence, 1241 Third St. S.E., Moultrie. The family will receive friends at the residence.

Alma Truett Hurley

MOULTRIE — Alma Truett Hurley, 78, of 230 B. Allman Road, Moultrie, died Saturday, July 19, 2003, at Colquitt Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Monday, July 21, at Baker Funeral Home with burial at Reedy Creek Cemtery. The Rev. J.E. Moak will officiate. Casketbearers will be Jacky Stanfill, Ricky Sangster, Troy Tyson, Wayne Tucker, Ronnie Edwards and Mike Tillman.

Mrs. Hurley was born Sept. 28, 1924, in Berrien County to the late Frank Hiers and Ruby Wilkes Hiers. She was a housewife and a Baptist.

Survivors include her husband, Bruce M. Hurley; one son, Jeffery I. Truett and wife Delia of Moultrie; one brother, Leroy Hiers and wife Sara of Smyrna; sisters, Beulah Tyson of Moultrie, Eula Edwards of Sparks, Nadine Stanfill and husband J.C. of Moultrie, Waunell Evans and husband Jr. of Norman Park, Bernice Baynes and husband Tom of Virginia, Lazelle Sangster of Moultrie and Joan Dorminey and husband Melvis of Moultrie; grandchildren, Melissa Burris, Jimmy Truitt, Amanda Truett, Alicia Truett, Kaileigh Truett, Travis Truett and Cameron, Calob and Jacob Parker-Main; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, James Franklin Truitt, and three brothers, Wilburn, Kleeman and Ralph Hiers.

Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. today at Baker Funeral Home.
