Lucille Singletary Whitaker
BARTOW, Fla. — Lucille Singletary Whitaker, 78, of Bartow, Fla., died Sunday, Aug. 24, 2003, at Bartow Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Services will be held Saturday, Aug. 30, at Whidden-McLean Funeral Home, Bartow, Fla. Interment will be in Wildwood Cemetery.
Born May 3, 1925, in Cairo, Mrs. Whitaker was the daughter of the late Arthur Charlie Singletary and Emma Lee Hurst. She was the seventh of 12 children, six boys and six girls. She married Herbert Whitaker on Sept. 19, 1943, in Moultrie. They moved their family to Bartow in 1948.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Herbert Whitaker; brothers, Arthur Carl Singletary of Orlando, Fla., Johnnie Crayton Singletary, Charlie Quenton Singletary and John Walter Singletary, all of Moultrie, Milton Lavon Singletary of Forrest Park; and sisters, Lillian Dallis McLendon of Moultrie, Vera Virginia Griffin of Americus and Joyce Ann Whitaker of Bartow, Fla.
Survivors include her daughter, Sarah Louise Robinson of Bartow; sons, Herbert Clarence (Buddy) Whitaker of Bartow and Bobby Whitaker of Statenville; sisters, Myrtle Lorene Hancock of Lakeland, Fla., and Senora Ovalene Boykin of Winter Haven, Fla.; a brother, Winston Dennis Singletary; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Whidden-McLean Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Wayne McBurrows
MOULTRIE — Wayne McBurrows, 56, 207 First Ave. S.W., died Sunday, Aug. 24, 2003, at his residence.
Arrangements will be announced by Strong Funeral Home.
Ruth Carroll Phillips
THOMASVILLE — Mrs. Ruth Carroll Phillips, 81, of Thomasville died Monday, Aug. 25, 2003, at her residence following a lengthy illness.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, in Whiddon-Shiver Funeral Home Chapel with Ray Council officiating.
Born Oct. 9, 1921, in Carroll County, Mrs. Phillips was the daughter of the late Thomas Rupert Carroll and Bessie Lee Murphy Carroll. She was married on Jan. 4, 1936, to James William Phillips in Carroll County. They made their home in Thomasville and Mr. Phillips died in 1950. Mrs. Phillips was a member of Dawson Street United Methodist Church and the Thomasville Garden Club. She retired as a seamstress.
In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by a daughter, Shirley Jeanne Miller; a granddaughter, Cilicia Crawford; and a son-in-law, Lee Roy Overmier.
Survivors include three sons, James W. Phillips Jr. and wife Mary of Cairo, Tommy Phillips and wife Sheryl of Moultrie, and Jerry Phillips and wife Paula of Tallahassee, Fla.; three daughters, Betty Sue Rohrick and husband RIck of Folsom, Calif., Jeanette Schultz and husband Pete of Richmond, Va., and Carol Overmier of Thomasville; a son-in-law, Howard Miller of Thomasville; 18 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the funeral home Thursday at the funeral chapel.
Memorials may be made to Thomas County Hospice.
