TIFTON — Darby Thompson has joined the faculty at Abraham Baldwin College as an instructor of family and consumer sciences in the Division of Agriculture and Forest Resources.

A native of Moultrie, Thompson received her master’s of education degree in Family and Consumer Sciences and her bachelor’s degree in Family and Consumer Sciences Education, both from the University of Georgia. She received her associate’s degree in Family and Consumer Sciences Education from ABAC.

Thompson is teaching five courses this semester, including Introduction to Marriage and Family, Introduction to Child Development, Fashion Fundamentals, Interior Systems and Equipment and Special Problems in Interiors. In addition to teaching, Thompson will also advise students majoring in the various Family and Consumer Sciences programs and serve as advisor to the Family and Consumer Sciences Club.

Thompson said coming back to ABAC is like coming home.

“I love ABAC, and I am very excited about being here,” Thompson said. “Everyone has welcomed me back and offered to help in any way possible. ABAC is also a tradition for my family. My parents are alumni, and my brother attended ABAC for a few quarters. I hope to have a long and successful career here.”

Thompson is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences and the Association for Career and Technical Educators. She will begin writing a food/nutrition column for The Tifton Gazette in February.

As a new instructor, Thompson has several goals for herself and her students.

“I want to challenge my students,” Thompson said. “I hope to stay current on trends and information that affects them in the job market. I also want to provide hands-on learning, technology in the classroom, and quality instruction. Above all, I would like to see my students have success at ABAC and in their careers.”

Dr. Larry Allen, chair of ABAC’s Division of Agriculture and Forest Resources, said the division is pleased to have Thompson as part of the ABAC team.

“As a student at ABAC, Darby had the ability to make great things happen,” Allen said. “I feel her ability and her energy will be great assets to the Family and Consumer Sciences Program and to ABAC.”
