MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County Hospital Authority has elected a new slate of officers, who will take office Oct. 1.

John B. “Benny” Alderman steps up from his previous position as finance chairman to replace J. Clarence Lowe as chairman of the board. Brooks Sheldon replaces Alderman as finance chairman. Anne Carlton replaces B. Durwood Dominey as quality assurance chairman.

Alderman is a native of Colquitt County and has served on the Hospital Authority for seven years. He has been involved as an owner and/or officer in numerous business ventures in the community over the years, including Destiny Industries, which was purchased by Oakwood in 1995; C.O. Smith Industries; Oakwood Homes Corp.; Triangle Ventures, a manufactured housing furniture support facility; Autrey Furniture Manufacturing Co.; Boggy Pond Plantation; Sundown Farms; Sunset Farms; Southlake Development Group; the Kendallwood Subdivision; and the Moultrie Inn.

Alderman has also served on the board of directors of the Colquitt County Arts Council, the Moultrie-Colquitt County Development Authority and the Packer Booster Club. He is a patron member of the Moultrie YMCA. He has long been known for his avid personal and financial support of youth recreation in Colquitt County, including baseball, football, softball and diving, and he has helped provide many educational opportunities for Colquitt County youth.

In 1997, Alderman was named “Man of the Year” by the Moultrie-Colquitt County Chamber of Commerce for his contributions to the community.

He and his wife, Ellen, are members of the Autreyville Baptist Church.

Sheldon joined the Hospital Authority three years ago, bringing to the board an extensive background in banking and finance. He served as president and a member of the board of directors of the American Banking Company until his retirement. A long-time Moultrie resident, he graduated from Moultrie High School and Davidson College and served in the U.S. Army, where he attained the rank of first lieutenant in the Signal Corps.

Sheldon has served in leadership roles in numerous community service organizations over the years, including United Way chairman, YMCA board of directors, Moultrie-Colquitt County Chamber of Commerce chairman, Colquitt County Development Authority chairman, Colquitt County Arts Center president, City of Moultrie Retirement Board, First Presbyterian Church elder, Communities in Schools of Colquitt County chairman, Family Connection board of directors and Odom Genealogy board of directors.

Carlton joined the Hospital Authority four years ago and has owned and operated Turner’s Ladies Fine Clothier in Moultrie for the past 25 years. She began working at the store shortly after she and her husband, Monty, moved to Colquitt County 35 years ago.

During the time she has lived in Colquitt County, Carlton has served as president of the chamber of commerce and was instrumental in establishing the Moultrie-Colquitt County Main Street program, which has raised money and community interest for downtown revitalization; she served as its first chairperson. She also served as first chairperson of the Historical Preservation Commission and has served as a member of the Downtown Moultrie Development Authority. An advocate for youth services, she served on the juvenile court Judicial Review Panel since its inception and was chairperson of the organization for nine years.

Carlton’s interest in Colquitt Regional Medical Center goes back as far as her roots in the community. Her experience with health care issues, both as a patient and in caring for an aged parent, has made her aware of the need for affordable, quality health care.

The Colquitt County Hospital Authority is the governing board of Colquitt Regional Medical Center in Moultrie. Officers serve a one-year term, October through September.
