Hiers takes title in Red Hill tournament

MOULTRIE — Moultrie’s Nathaniel Hiers defeated Tifton’s Jacob Sauls 6-4, 6-0 in the finals to win the boys 16 singles title on Monday in the Red Hill Junior Classic Championships held at Abraham Baldwin College in Tifton.

Hiers was among 12 Colquitt County player who took part in the tournament, which drew 75 boys and girls players from around south Georgia.

The other Colquitt County players who took part were Clayton Brooks, Landi Clark, Taylor Dekalb, Christopher Harvin, Lindsay Jacobs, Bradley Michie, Brian Michie, Gracie Qurnell, Elizabeth Singley, Elizabeth Yearta and Austin York.

Hiers opened play with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Colquitt County High teammate Brian Michie. His quarterfinal win also came over a Packer when he defeated Clayton Brooks 6-2, 6-2.

In the semifinals, Hiers downed Bainbridge’s Wesley Powell 6-3, 6-2.

Jacobs also reached the finals in the girls 16 singles, but fell to Fort Valley’s Roberta Robinson 3-6, 2-6 in the girls 14 singles. Jacobs had defeated Landi Clark in teh semifinals 7-5, 6-1.

Abbigail McCrary, who also plays in Colquitt County, fell to Robinson in the semifinals 2-6, 1-6.

Gracie Qurnell advanced to the semifinals in the girls 16 singles before falling to Sarah Dutcher of Tifton, 4-6, 3-6.
