MOULTRIE — A county department head who recently was suspended during an investigation of allegations he sexually harassed a female employee is no longer employed with the county.

County Administrator Marion Hay would not discuss any details of the allegations. However, County Commissioners Luke Strong and Merle Hall said the accusations were made against Lawrence Wise, superintendent of the Building and Grounds Department.

He was suspended with pay pending the outcome of a non-criminal internal investigation by Colquitt County Sheriff’s Department. The investigation was completed Thursday, but the results of that inquiry will not be released, Hay said.

“It’s a personnel matter and I can’t talk to you about that,” Hay said. “Sometimes you just can’t talk about personnel matters of that type. It doesn’t need to be in the paper until there is some resolution. He deserves to be proven right or wrong or indifferent.”

Hay did confirm, without naming Wise, that a county employee was suspended while the sheriff’s department conducted an investigation into allegations.

“I understand that he (Wise) is no longer employed by the county,” said commissioner Hall.

Attempts to reach Wise Thursday were unsuccessful.

“Ethically, I can’t talk about it,” Hay said. “It’s a closed matter.”

Hay said the recent complaint was handed to the sheriff’s department because he did not have time to examine the complaint and that he was not comfortable investigating this matter.

“These department heads, sometimes you get too close when you work with them, and it’s better to have someone independent look into it,” Hay said.

Commissioner Strong said there was an allegation made of sexual harassment against Wise.

On Thursday, Strong said that results of the investigation were scheduled to be released to Hay that afternoon.

“We haven’t heard anything,” he said. “He (Hay) said as soon as he got the report back he would let us know.

“I was a little surprised about the allegations against him. Right now, we’re just going to wait and see what happens.”
