MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County Arts Center is holding auditions next month for a performance of one of the most popular Broadway musicals.

The Arts Center will be performing “Grease” Aug. 20 and 21, and the center is holding open auditions June 1, starting at 5 p.m.

Neeley McRae, assistant to the executive director at the Arts Center, said all parts are open, including the leads of Danny and Sandy. The performance is geared more toward junior high students to adults under 30. There is one part available to an individual over 30, so everyone is invited to try out.

McRae said tryouts will be done on an individual basis to try to put the performer at ease and allow them to be themselves rather than imitate another performer.

Tryouts will consist of three one-minute performances, McRae said. Each applicant will be mailed material to read for one minute. Performers will then sing and dance for one minute each, which can either be prepared or ad-libbed.

The Arts Center’s presentation is in celebration of the 25th anniversary of “Grease,” McRae said. Their performance will be cleaned up a little because the original version is a little too vulgar, she said.

Anyone interesting in trying out is asked to contact the Arts Center at 985-1922 and set up an audition appointment, McRae said. The Arts Center can also be contacted for further information.

MOULTRIE — An argument between two teenage girls Tuesday night led to a fight breaking out on a church bus.

A call to 911 brought police out to the fight which started as a bus from Lifespring Community Church was taking the two girls home. A 16-year-old girl was charged with battery, and a 13-year-old girl was charged with simple battery.

Reports said the girls were attending a youth gathering at Lifespring when the girls started arguing. Their argument continued as they and other children were loaded onto the bus to be taken home.

As the bus was traveling on First Avenue Southeast, reports said the argument became physical. The church’s youth pastor, Rebecca Strany, tried to separate the girls but was unsuccessful. She then called 911 in order to get assistance in separating the girls.

Police arrived and separated the girls from the rest of the children, reports said. Those children were taken home while the two girls were taken to the Moultrie Police Department, where they were interviewed with their parents.

The 13-year-old girl had a superficial skin abrasion and swollen lip but the 16 year-old suffered no noted injuries, reports said.
