Sales tax
Before you say no to the upcoming sales tax, think about the fact that the burdens will fall back on property taxes. With a sales tax, everyone gets to participate. Don’t cut off your nose to spite your face.
Stewardship
Don’t be so hard on the courthouse. The leaks will get fixed and we have a beautiful building that we should be proud of. Also, let’s resolve to keep it up on a regular basis and not let it get in such bad shape in the future. Let’s practice stewardship.
Promises?
So you want a promise from County Commission that they will cut back property taxes? Keep in mind that one board cannot obligate a future board to such promises. And there will be future boards.
Smelling the rose
To the person who enjoyed sitting on the back porch and listening to the crickets and frogs and enjoying the moment, that’s called stopping to smell the roses.
We ought to do a lot more of that. It’s amazing how many of our problems we could sort through if we did that. We don’t need to take yoga.
Top heavy
I think our county salaries have gotten a little top heavy. We’re lucky to get people to go to work for the county at regular jobs. It’s getting more difficult for them to make a living at it.
Gas prices
It’s curious to me that I can buy gasoline a good bit cheaper in some of the surrounding small towns. I assume they, too, are making a profit off the sales. So it must mean that someone else is making an exorbitant profit.
Great country
I find it interesting how someone who keeps ranting about our government refers to it as “communist.” Such is blatant ignorance. We live in the greatest country in the world. In fact, there are many places where he would not be publicly ranting about the government. Then he would know what communism is all about.
Think about it
I like to watch the young kids play baseball and softball. What I don’t like is to constantly hear parents bellyaching about the coaches, the system and how unfair things are. Are you telling all of this to the kids so they can grow to bellyache? Or are you letting them play and have fun? Think about it.
Proud
I am proud that our community is pursuing a shelter for abused women. I know the importance of having some place to go when your world has become this distraught. I have first-hand knowledge of this kind of nightmare. I just hope everyone will get behind this thing. The story said that DHR is waiting to see if the community is behind this project. I hope we will make that statement in no uncertain terms. This shelter is badly needed. It might not solve all the problems related to domestic violence but it sure will help.
Applause
I want to applaud all of those people who were instrumental in getting our BMX track in Moultrie. This is wholesome outdoor activity. Someone earlier had complained about the dangers on a bike track. Well I don’t think the dangers there are as great as they are when kids don’t have some place to play. I think this facility is far better than them sitting around the house all day playing video games.
Hats off
Hats off to Riverside Manufacturing Co. for contributing a large sum to the Serenity House project. I think this is a project we will all be proud of once it gets established.
911 tape
I read about the 911 tape of the child telling about his mother being abused. Maybe the whole community needs to hear this tape. I think that would bring home the reality of the problem of domestic violence that we experience in our hometown.
