Just three days left to register to vote

MOULTRIE — Unregistered voters have just three more days to get on the rolls in time to cast a ballot for national and local elections in the November general election.

As of Wednesday there were 22,394 Colquitt County residents eligible to cast ballots, including inactive voters who may have missed an election or two but have not been removed from the voter list.

As a general rule of thumb, those who voted in the 2008 general election or a later one will still be eligible.

In the preceding weeks the ranks of eligible voters has been growing with new registrations, said Paula McCullough, county voter registrar.

“They’re wanting to come in and vote already, they’re registering, they’re requesting absentee ballots,” she said. “It’s just crazy.”

The interest in voting seems to be about the same as in 2008, with presidential elections always bringing out the biggest crowds compared to other years.

In 2004 73.52 percent of registered voters in the county participated, with that number dropping slightly to 69.38 percent in 2008.

Those who have moved within the county since last casting a ballot can change their address at the poll, McCullough said.

“If you haven’t voted or had any contact or activity with voter registration in four years, you need to re-register,” she said.

There are several ways to register, including visiting the registrar’s office at the Colquitt County Courthouse Annex, at government offices including Department of Family and Children Services, Department of Driver Services or military recruitment offices, or online. To register by computer, visit the Secretary of State’s office at http://www.sos.ga.gov. State residents also can check their registration status at that site by clicking on “My Voter Page.”

Although the Secretary of State’s office is taking the Monday Columbus Day holiday, the county office will be open. Tuesday is the final day to register to be eligible to vote in the November election.
