POWDER SPRINGS — Colquitt County held off a late rally to defeat McEachern 30-28 on Friday at Walter H. Cantrell Stadium to advance to second round of the state playoffs.

The outcome was in doubt until sophomore linebacker Bull Barge picked off a Ty Griffin pass on the last play of the game.

The Packers will travel to Newnan to meet the Cougars in the second round of the playoff next Friday. The Cougars advanced with a 38-0 victory over Alcovy on Friday.

Two other Region 1-AAAAAA teams fell on Friday with Lowndes being defeated by 30-27 at home by Marietta and Valdosta falling 42-14 to North Cobb. Camden County advanced, defeating Hillgrove 52-17.

The Packers raised their road record over the last four seasons to 9-2 with the victory over the Region 4 champion Indians.

Colquitt led 17-10 at the half and held in the second half, never losing the lead, but the Indians pulled to within two on a 2-yard run by Ty Griffin with 5:02 left.

McEachern got the ball for the last time with 1:01 left in the game when a Tyler Yost punt went out of bounds at the Indians 2.

The Indians drove to the Colquitt 48 before Barge intercepted near the sideline and remained in bounds long enough for the clock to run out on the Indians 8-3 season

Colquitt will take an 8-3 record to Newnan next Friday. The Packers are 11-3 in the postseason since 2009.

The Packers got a record-tying performance from senior quarterback Cole Segraves, who threw for 354 yards. He completed 22-of-27 passes and tied the yardage record set by Tyler Brown in the 2009 state championship game.

Bobby Hill also had a big game, catching 11 passes for 158 yards.

Colquitt led 17-10 at the half, but the lead could have been greater but for two bad snaps deep in McEachern territory.

The Indians took the opening kickoff and drove to Packers 16, where they were forced to settle for a 38-yard field goal by Dennis Dominquez go up 3-0 with 8:04 left in the first quarter.

The Packers responded quickly, driving 75 yards in nine plays to score on a 3-yard run by Segraves. Will Bannister's conversion put the Packers up 7-3 with 4:57 left in the quarter.

McEachern then drove for a touchdown on its next possession, marching 81 yards on 10 plays to score on a 12-yard pass from Ty Clemons to Trey Scott. Dominquez converted the extra point and the Indians led 10-7 with 41 seconds left in the quarter.

Colquitt also scored on its second possession, driving 80 yards to score a touchdown on a 1-yard, fourth-down run by John Boatwright with 8:35 left in the half. Bannister's conversion put the Packers up 14-10.

The Packers came up with a big stop on McEachern's next possession and appeared to be headed for a third touchdown when disaster struck.

On a first-and-goal at the McEachern 10, a snap went over Segraves head and the Packers quarterback was forced to fall on it at the 22.

Three plays later, the Packers were forced to attempt a field goal, but Roberto Vega's attempt from 40 yards was wide right.

The Packers held again forcing a McEachern punt with 1:30 left in the half.

But Colquitt quickly marched downfield, reaching a third-and-goal at the McEachern 5.

Again, the Packers were hurt by a bad snap that Segraves had to fall on at the 11.

Bannister was called on to attempt his first field goal attempt of the season, and he punched it through to put the Packers up 17-10 with 43 seconds left.

McEachern used the final seconds to drive to the Packers 21, where the Indians lined up in field goal formation with 2.8 seconds left.

But the Indians faked the attempt, with Clemons at first looking for a receiver then running free before he was tackled on the 7 by Tim Sanders as time ran out in the half.

Segraves was 14-for-17 for 218 yards in the first half, with Bobby Hill grabbing seven for 102 yards.

Todd Boyd had two catches in the first half for 66 yards, including a 36-yarder that put the ball on the Indians 5 before the second bad snap resulted in the Bannister field goal.

McEachern rushed for 130 yards in the first half, including 88 by Ty Griffin.

The Indians also threw for 86 yards in the first two quarters.

McEachern got a 28-yard field goal from Dennis Dominguez with 7:54 left in the third quarter to pull the Indians to within four at 17-13.

But Segraves came right back and tossed a 52-yard touchdown pass to Todd Boyd to put the Packers up 24-13 with 1:57 left in the third quarter

Griffin pulled the Indians to within three at 24-21 with a four-yard touchdown run and 2-point conversion run with 11:25 left in the game.

But Colquitt then marched 80 yards on seven plays with Boatwright busting in from 2 yards out with 9:17 left in the game.

Bannister’s extra point was wide left and Colquitt's lead was nine.

Griffin’s run four minutes later cut the Packers lead to two, but the Indians got no further.
