MOULTRIE —
Bob Windom, a two-time All-American who helped lead the Columbus College golf team to Division II national championships in 1978 and 1980, is being honored by his alma mater, having been selected as a member of the now-Columbus State University Athletic Hall of Fame’s five-person Class of 2013.
The induction banquet will held April 25.
“That’s a big honor,” said Windom, a Moultrie High graduate and current golf professional at Sunset Country Club. “I’m proud of it.”
Also being inducted that night will be contributor Dr. Champ Baker, former baseball player Chris Barrett and former tennis players Diana Gherghi and Linda Rolling.
Windom also is a member of the Colquitt County Sports Hall of Fame, having been inducted in 2003.
Also the winner of the 1983 Georgia State Amateur, Windom was first golfer to enter the Colquitt County Hall of Fame.
Windom learned golf at Sunset Country Club as a youngster under golf pro Herring Cole.
After his senior year on the Moultrie High golf team coached by Ed Turner, Windom appeared headed to Alexander City Junior College.
But Cole contacted former touring professional Hugh Royer, who had just become the coach at Columbus.
Windom took Royer’s “timing and tempo” principle and became one of the leaders of four outstanding Cougar teams.
The 1978 and 1980 teams won national championships.
The 1979 team was the national runner-up. In 1981, Columbus finished fifth.
Among his teammates at Columbus were Tommy Brannen, Bubba Patrick, Fred Holton and Bill Roberts, all of whom, like Windom, were All-Americans.
Others were Jim Stuart, a member of the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame, and Bobby Sauers.
“We could play with Florida, Alabama, Georgia, LSU, any of them,” Windom said when he was inducted into the Colquitt County Sports Hall of Fame. “We were pretty good for a Division II school.”
Windom qualified for the NCAA Tournament as an individual in 1980 and while his missed the cut, he shot rounds of 77 and 73.
He is the first member of the Columbus national championship teams selected for the Hall of Fame.
Perhaps his most memorable moment came in July 1983 at Valdosta Country Club when he became the first Colquitt County gofler to win the Georgia State Golf Association’s amateur championship.
He was the first south Georgia golfer to win the title in more than a decade.
Windom worked as a greenskeeper at Sunset before being named the golf professional at Circlestone in Adel in 1989.
While at Circlestone, he ws in charge of the expansion of the course from nine to 18 holes and the construction of the new pro shop and clubhouse.
In 2005, after 16 years at Circlestone, Windom returned home, named the golf professional at Sunset, succeeding Kerry Smith.
Windom left Sunset briefly in 2010 to take the job as golf professional at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club in Valdosta.
But he soon returned again to his home course.
Windom is popular with club members and has gained a reputation for the fine work he does with the club’s junior golf program.
