Kirkland wins state diving championship

MOULTRIE — Colquitt County’s Elizabeth Ann Kirkland won the Georgia High School Association’s Class AAAAA state diving championship on Friday at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center.

Kirkland, a junior, scored a 486.80.

“Elizabeth Ann did a great job,” said coach Ed Goodman. “She didn’t miss anything.”

Kirkland, who had been ill and missed several practices, finished fourth in her previous meet.

“But she has had two good weeks of practice,” Goodman said.

Kirkland’s victory adds her name to the list of Colquitt County divers who have won state championships. That list also includes Tonya Mims, Camila McLean, Nikki Unroe, Katie Beth Bryant, Lane Bassham, Lauryn McCalley, Camille Akridge, Hannah Moore and Kelsey Goodman.

Finishing second on Friday was Alexandria Hart of Kennesaw Mountain High with a 452.20.

Tift County senior Ashley Roberson, who trains with Kirkland at Moss Farms Diving, was third.

The Auburn-bound Roberson scored a 447.50.

Colquitt County High had two more divers to finish in the top 13 as the Lady Packers took first place in the team standings with 33 points.

Senior Haley Goodman was ninth with a 357.65. And senior Ana Jimenez was 13th with a 322.90.

The meet drew 23 divers.

“We had two of the top three and four in the top 15,” said Ed Goodman, who also is the head coach at Moss Farms Diving. “I was pretty pleased with that.”

Kirkland finished second in the state meet last year, finishing 14.25 behind Hart.

As a freshman in 2010, she was third behind Colquitt County High teammates Kelsey Goodman, who won her third state title, and Ann-Perry Blank.

Goodman is now diving at Florida State. Blank dives for the University of Georgia.
