Hogan and Reid rally to win Ramsey Pidcock

MOULTRIE — MOULTRIE — The opportunity for Kevin Blanton and Greg Coop to successfully defend their Ramsey Pidcock Invitational championship slipped away on Sunday  on No. 14, where they carded double-bogey.

As Coop said, “We gave it away on No. 14.”

And Sam Hogan and Greg Reid took advantage, shooting a second straight 63 for a 126 that beat Blanton and Coop by one stroke in the annual Sunset Country Club tournament.

The twosomes of Greg Parrish and Ernie Venet and Aaron Elrod and John Lee Redding each shot 131, with Parrish and Venet taking third by regression.

Blanton sank a 30-foot birdie putt on 18, but it was not enough to catch the steady and consistent Hogan and Reid.

Hogan also won the Ramsey Pidcock in 2007, playing with Allen Hampton.

Blanton played college golf with Hogan and played with Reid, who is from South Africa, on the Hooters Tour and didn’t expect them to go away.

Hogan and Reid trailed by one shot after the first round and also trailed by a shot at the turn on Sunday.

“I knew they’d be tough to beat,” Blanton said. “And we each had one bad swing on 14. And it cost us.”

Hogan is familiar with Sunset’s course, having also played in the Pot o’ Gold Pro-am several times.

Both Hogan and Reid played consistently both days.

“Greg made a couple of putts that were really key,” Hogan said. Reid quickly added, “Sam made his fair share, too.”

Blanton now has been on either the winning team or the runner-up team each of the last six years.

In addition to winning with Coop last year, he won with brother Andy Blanton in 2005.

In 2006, the Blanton brothers lost a playoff to Casey Willis and George Faircloth to finish second. Kevin and Adam Thomas were the runners-up in 2007 to Hogan and Hampton. And Coop and Blanton finished second in 2008 to Marcus Beck and Darin Bentz.

Parrish and Venet followed a Saturday 67 with a 64 on Sunday and got a birdie on the last hole that helped take third place.

Elrod and Redding turned in the tournament’s best round with a 61 on Sunday, with Elrod shooting an 8-under 64 on his own ball. Redding was one-under at 71.

Determined to put Saturday’s 70 behind them, the two were six under through five holes and sailed through the hot afternoon.

“We were on the prowl,” Elrod said.

The first flight finished in a three-way tied at 134.

On regression, the team of Andrew Dismuke and Mark Massey were first, Jacob Joiner and Von Stripling were second and Jon Ladson and Phil Rouse were third.

The other flights and there winners were:

Second flight, Jesse Tillman and Todd Hood, 71-66-137; third flight, J.Cody Neal and Brock Young, 68-690137; fourth flight, Reid Penuel and Joseph Key, 72-70-142; fifth flight, Donald Dale and Drake Dale, 69-69-138; sixth flight, Danny Grantham and Drew Moore, 75-68-143; seventh flight, Josh Dale and Gardener Dale, 75-73-146; eighth flight, Ray Foster and Charlie Crumbley, 76-73-149.
