MOULTRIE —
The Colquitt County girls basketball team will get the chance to avenge its only loss of the young season when it plays in the holiday basketball tournament that will run Thursday through Saturday on the William Bryant Court at the Gladys Espy Gymnasium.
Six boys teams and eight girls teams will take part in the event, which is sponsored by Colquitt Regional Medical Center and Crystal Pharmacy.
It will feature seven games each day.
Play will begin at 11:30 a.m. Thursday with a boys game between Josey High of Augusta and Westside High of Macon.
Competition will start at 9:30 a.m. on Friday at Saturday.
Also in the boys bracket are Colquitt County, Pelham, Washington County and Stone Mountain.
The girls teams included are Colquitt County, Rickards, Washington County, Albany, Norland High of Miami, Monroe, Pelham and Florida A&M High.
The Lady Packers and Packers will play in the final two games each day.
On Thursday, the Colquitt County boys will meet Stone Mountain at 7 p.m. The Lady Packers will meet FAMU at 8:30 p.m.
On Friday, the Packers will meet Josey at 5:30 p.m. and the Lady Packers will face Pelham at 7 p.m.
On the final day of the tournament, Colquitt County’s girls will play Rickards at 5:30 p.m. and the Packers will close the tournament with a game against Pelham at 7 p.m.
The Colquitt County boys will take a 2-2 record into their shootout opener against Stone Mountain and coach Levon Grant is eager to see his recently fortified team in action.
Competing without several players who were with the Packers football team still involved in the state playoffs, the Packers won a pair of games over Lee County and dropped road games at Bainbridge and Albany.
Xavier Terry is leading the Packers in scoring with a 19.8 average and scored 29 in the first game against Lee County and 21 against Albany.
The Colquitt County girls are 5-1 and will take a five-game winning streak into their tournament opener against FAMU.
And it was the unbeaten and defending Florida Class 2A state champion Lady Rattlers that dealt the Lady Packers their only loss with a 54-49 victory on Nov. 23 in the Fastbreak Shoot-out at Rickards High in Tallahassee.
Colquitt’s girls have defeated Rickards, Lee County, Bainbridge, Albany and Lee County again since then.
The Lady Packers have been led by All-State guard Makeba Ponder, who is averaging 21.2 points a game.
She scored 30 points in the first game against FAMU.
The most interesting matchup of the tournament is expected to be the 4 p.m. Friday girls game between FAMU and Norland.
Norland, 14-0, is the defending Florida Class 6A state runner-up. The 46-36 loss in last season’s state championship game to Orlando Edgewater ended a string of three straight state championships for Norland, which has four starters back this season.
