MOULTRIE — MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County middle school softball team put on an impressive performance in its home debut on Thursday, sweeping a doubleheader from Pine Grove at Packer Park.

The Lady Packers rallied from a six-run deficit to win the opener 7-6 with a run in the bottom of the fifth, then blanked the Vikettes in the second game 6-0.

The middle school Lady Packers are now 3-1 as they prepare to play host to Lowndes Middle School in a 4 p.m. doubleheader next Tuesday.

The Thursday doubleheader did not start well for Colquitt County as Pine Grove scored five runs in the top of the first and added another in the second.

But the Vikettes never scored again the rest of the day.

Colquitt tied the first game with six runs in the bottom of fourth.

And after pitcher Niki Johnson held Pine Grove scoreless in the top of the fifth, the Lady Packers won it quickly in the bottom of the inning.

Johnson drew a walk to open the inning and stole second base.

Paris Sumner then beat out an infield single as Johnson hustled around to score from second base.

Christin Hunnicutt and Amber Kling each had two hits and Johnson, Sumner, Emily Dozier and Rebekah Ward had one each. Johnson’s hit was a double.

Coach Chrissi Hall said she was pleased that her team was able to rally to win the first game.

Kling, Ward and Ashleigh Spradley had hits in the second game.

Johnson pitched and went the distance in both games, striking out two in the first game and four in the second.

“It was great to win our first games at home,” Hall said.
