Seventh-grade Gold football opens with victory

MOULTRIE — MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County seventh-grade Gold football team made a little history on Wednesday.

With its 40-20 victory over Pine Grove in its season-opener, the young Packers became the first Colquitt County team to win a game on the new turf on Tom White Field at Mack Tharpe Stadium.

Tyree Lee especially found the turf to his liking.

Lee rushed for 189 on 11 carries and scored touchdowns on runs of 20, 54, 60 and 40 yards to lead the Packers offense.

He also threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Michael Johnson.

“He creates a lot of stuff that is not there sometimes,” seventh-grade Gold coach Jimmy Whitfield said.

Landon Scott also ran for 56 yards and had 44-yard touchdown as the Packers rang up 284 yards of offense.

And Colquitt had to do all their work after falling behind when Pine Grove scored on its first possession.

“For a first game, I thought we did pretty well,” Whitfield said. “We didn’t have a lot of turnovers that you sometimes have in the first game.”

Pine Grove also scored on long plays, including a 67-yard run by Dezman Copeland on the fifth play of the game that put the Vikings up 6-0.

But Colquitt answered on their first possession, driving 70 yards on seven plays to score on Lee’s 20-yard touchdown run with 1:11 left in the first quarter.

After the Packers held Pine Grove on a fourth-and-two at the Vikings 45, Lee broke off a 54-yard touchdown run two plays later and the Packers went up 12-6.

Colquitt County scored again with 3:28 left in the half when, on fourth-and-11 from the Pine Grove 19, Lee took a pitch, stopped and threw a perfect pass to Michael Johnson for the touchdown.

Johnson also preserved the 18-6 halftime lead when he intercepted a Pine Grove pass with 16 seconds left in the half.

Lee bolted 60 yards on the first play of the second half to put the Packers up 24-6.

Late in the third quarter, Coquitt recovered a Pine Grove fumble and on the next play, Lee ran 40 yards for the touchdown and Johnson added the extra points to put Colquitt up 32-6.

Copeland closed the gap when he ran 52 yard for his second touchdown of the game with 7:30 remaining and Malik Wright ran in the 2-point conversion.

But the Packers countered when Scott barreled 44 yards for a touchdown and Rafael Merritt added the 2-point conversion to put Colquitt up 40-14 with 5:35 remaining.

Pine Grove scored the game’s final points on 48-yard touchdown run by Tai Hatcher.

The Gold team will be off next week and will travel to Coffee on Sept. 15.

The seventh-grade Black team was off Wednesday and will travel to Tift County next Wednesday.
